Raptors announce 3-year extension for Dwane Casey

It's official.

The Toronto Raptors have agreed in principle to a three-year contract extension with head coach Dwane Casey, the team announced Tuesday.

“Dwane has done an excellent job leading our teams to success on the court and with helping us to develop a winning culture throughout our organization,” general manager Masai Ujiri said in a statement. “Continuity is a part of establishing that culture. We are confident that with Dwane’s leadership we will continue to grow our franchise.”

The deal was first reported by Dave Zarum of Sportsnet last week, with Adrian Wojnarowski reporting that the three-year pact will pay the coach $18 million through 2018-19. You can read more about the extension and why it’s a good thing here. I’m not going to rehash all of that again – this is just making what we knew official.

“My family and I are very appreciative to ownership and Masai for the opportunity to continue to lead the growth of our program,” Casey said in the same release. “We are energized with the idea of the potential we have with our core players and the development of our young players. Our goal has been and will be to build a program that is competing for a championship year in and year out.”

In the time since the news came down, the Raptors have reportedly picked up their options on Andy Greer and Rex Kalamian, keeping Casey’s staff in tact unless a head coaching offer comes their way (Nick Nurse is also under contract for next year). This is all good news, as we talked about last week.
