Is the tank stuck in mud?
SA Spurs | 112 | Final Box Score | 117 | TOR Raptors |
A | K. Birch29 MIN, 14 PTS, 6 REB, 1 AST, 1 STL, 6-9 FG, 0-0 3FG, 2-2 FT, 2 BLK, 0 TO, 8 +/- Timely help-side rotations, short-roll shot-making, rim-runs. A breath of fresh air to see the hands and mobility that he brought to the starting center position tonight. Good stuff.
A+ | O. Anunoby34 MIN, 22 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL, 7-14 FG, 4-7 3FG, 4-4 FT, 0 BLK, 2 TO, 3 +/- Huge fan of his offensive involvement early on. Featured in the stagger screen set early, and took on repeated possessions in the pick n’ roll as the game progressed. A pull-up triple went down. Stuck multiple catch and shoot triples. Brought his classically great defense. Awesome.
A- | C. Boucher33 MIN, 12 PTS, 12 REB, 1 AST, 1 STL, 5-9 FG, 2-6 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 5 TO, 2 +/- Really helped close out a bunch of defensive possessions when competing on the glass. The Spurs send their guards in to stealth rebound and he beat them to the punch repeatedly. The pick n’ pop/flare actions are still a win for the Raptors offense, and he is a natural complement to Siakam’s game. Too many turnovers, but that’s life.
A | P. Siakam37 MIN, 20 PTS, 11 REB, 6 AST, 2 STL, 7-20 FG, 0-1 3FG, 6-7 FT, 1 BLK, 2 TO, 4 +/- An inefficient shooting night, but was a major factor in a lot of the Raptors offensive success. Attacked gaps with a little more patience later on in the game and helped the Raptors close it out, in addition to playmaking consistently for his 37 minutes of playtime. That, and a nice game defensively full of problem solving.
A- | M. Flynn32 MIN, 16 PTS, 4 REB, 7 AST, 2 STL, 4-15 FG, 3-7 3FG, 5-6 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, -4 +/- The 3-point potency is extremely meaningful. And he’s capable of dusting a lot of players who switch out onto him with an impressive in-n-out dribble or a hesitation. Providing the Raptors with a quality pick n’ roll reset option has been fantastic to fall back on. He just makes quality ‘point guard’ decisions in the flow of the game. And his defense is still bang on to my eye.
A+ | Y. Watanabe19 MIN, 11 PTS, 4 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 4-6 FG, 3-5 3FG, 0-0 FT, 1 BLK, 1 TO, 9 +/- Grading on a curve, naturally. The extra shot-making pop that he’s worked into his game transforms him – and his excellent defense – from a borderline rotation player, to a player you feel guilty about not getting into double-digits. Multiple transformative defensive plays, and really impressive shot hunting. Excellent game.
A- | F. Gillespie18 MIN, 9 PTS, 8 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 3-5 FG, 0-0 3FG, 3-4 FT, 3 BLK, 1 TO, -3 +/- Beat DeMar DeRozan and Nathan Knight at the summit in back to back games. Have to love guys who contest dunks. Improvisational screening is pretty on the ball, and he consistently finds himself in the right place on both sides of the court. He’s been moving so well in space. Forget the 10-day, offer him the 2-year contract.
A | P. Watson14 MIN, 9 PTS, 2 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 3-4 FG, 2-3 3FG, 1-2 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, 3 +/- Came into the game and formed up off of drives and banged triples offensively. Defensively, he showed off his defensive range (which was prevalent before he missed time) and continued to make a difference contesting shots. Is really picking up on how to cycle through the Raptors defense.
B- | R. Hood14 MIN, 4 PTS, 3 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 2-5 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, 0 +/- Had a couple encouraging pick n’ roll possessions. But, his performance was mostly non-descript.
C | S. Johnson5 MIN, 0 PTS, 0 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 0-1 FG, 0-1 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, 3 +/- If Watanabe and Watson continue to perform like this, he’s likely the odd man out. We’ll see how the rotation shapes up going forward.
A+ | Nick Nurse Loved the sets to open up Anunoby and Siakam in this one. Far more screen help than we’re used to seeing them get. That alone gets an A+ from me. Not to mention the defensive game plan was pretty crisp in this game. |
Things We Saw
- Have to appreciate DeMar becoming one of the best playmaking wings in the NBA. His perception of the defenses rotations in the pick n’ roll is so crisp and so automatic that he can’t help but spoonfeed his teammates with heaps of open shots.
- I don’t envy Siakam’s job. Every foray into the paint typically sees him met with 3 bodies at the very least. It was really nice to see Birch, Boucher and Gillespie alleviate some of that pressure by clearing into open space and actually scoring the ball when delivered. Nice to see.
- Gary Trent Jr. What a fit.
