Scottie Barnes has been named as a rookie participant in the NBA’s Rising Stars game. He is the first Raptor selected since OG Anunoby in 2019. Barnes is averaging 14.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 0.9 steals per game. He is a top-four rookie for points, rebounds, and assists. Precious Achiuwa has been named a sophomore participant, averaging 7.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.6 blocks, and 0.5 steals per game. He is second among sophomores in rebounds per game.
This year’s Rising Stars game will actually be a mini tournament, played over the course of three games on February 18 in Cleveland. Rookies, sophomores, and players from the G League Ignite — most of whom are not eligible to play in the NBA — will be divided into four teams for the tournament. They’ll be coached by a member of the NBA 75 teams, and games will be played with an Elam ending (hello CEBL!). There’s lots to be excited for.
Barnes and Achiuwa are both deserving of their slots. Barnes has been a leading candidate for the Rookie of the Year award throughout the season along with Evan Mobley and Cade Cunningham, and his offensive skillset especially has been a revelation. He seems like a surefire star in the making. Achiuwa has been one of Toronto’s best defenders, and he’s lived up to his mantle as Toronto’s haul in the Kyle Lowry trade. Both are highflying and athletic, readymade for showcase games such as the Rising Stars. Consider this the first of what will surely be many accolades for both in the NBA.
