Paul Pierce stirred things up week with a candid interview with ESPN’s Jackie MacMullen. The 16-year veteran of three teams dished out on everybody – and I mean everybody. Pierce took a steaming dump on the Nets, gave some very honest criticism to a former teammate in Rajon Rondo and he even threw a little dirt at the Raptors.
“We haven’t done particularly well against Toronto, but I don’t feel they have the ‘It’ that makes you worried. There isn’t a team I look at in the Eastern Conference that makes me say, ‘They are intimidating, we don’t have a chance.’”
Pierce’s comments elicited responses from both DeMar DeRozan and Masai Ujiri, but on Wednesday, Pierce cleared the air.
Pierce clarified his “It” comment on Raptors. Said he meant that they and other East teams don’t have the superstars to take over games.

In a way, Pierce has a point, although it comes off as yet another insult. The Raptors have three players in Lou Williams, Kyle Lowry and DeRozan that aren’t afraid of taking over, but none of them qualify as superstars who can reliably “take over.” Although, it’s worth noting that the Wizards also lack such a player, but that’s what makes this series fascinating.
Let’s hope the Raptors prove Pierce wrong in the playoffs. A few more of these should convince him.
