News and Rumors: Raptors sign Delon Wright, linked to Will Bynum

Raptors ink Delon Wright to rookie-scale contract, reportedly linked to Will Bynum

Lots of talk about point guards on a slow Friday.

Raptors sign Delon Wright to his rookie deal

This is not a surprise. The Raptors signed their first-round pick. Almost every first-round pick gets a deal. With Greivis Vasquez gone and Lou Williams potentially following suit, Wright is as much of a prospect as he is a piece for the present. Wright was selected with the 20th pick, which means the range of his earning potential is within 80 to 120 percent of figures shown here.

It’s no big deal. Wright was already on the books as a cap hold, so this doesn’t really affect cap room, unless Wright signed for something other than 100 percent. It’s fairly common for rookies to earn the maximum allowable, but that’s a miniscule detail. The fact that he signed so soon suggests that he took 100 percent, or less, from the Raptors.

Report: Raptors among six teams interested in Will Bynum

The Raptors could use some depth at point guard, but most veteran names will likely latch on with contenders, leaving scraps for pseudo-contenders to scrounge.

Enter: Will Bynum

(Are you excited yet?)

Bynum is an eight-year veteran point guard that spent the bulk of his career with the Pistons. Standing at 6-foot, weighing 185-pounds, the 32-year-old guard projects to top out as a third guard or a backup guard in a pinch. He remained unsigned for most of last season before latching on with the Wizards.

I used to love watching this dude play because he was one of those rare little guys who could rise up. However, those springs simply don’t have the same bounce.

I’m onboard with the idea of grabbing a guard on the cheap. The goal should be to find a combo guard who can defend his position while toggling between one and two. Admittedly, the market is overheating, with names like Marco Belinelli getting more than the mid-level, but I think Masai could probably do better than Bynum. He’s a bit too small, he’s not really a shooter and a tad too old to fit.
