Quick Reaction: Raptors 76, Heat 96

The Raptors turned in their first...I don't even know what to call this...of the season.

The Raptors were bad. I did not give these grades much thought, and you shouldn’t either. Best to just let this one go.

Recap | Box Score
96Miami Heat
James Johnson, PF 26 MIN | 3-5 FG | 0-0 3FG | 1-4 FT | 7 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 7 PTS | -4 +/-

A terrific first half where he played within himself, made some smart passes, and only occasionally lost his man on cuts, Johnson tried to do too much in the third and was promptly shelved. Decent game overall but telling that with so few options, Casey was quick to go away from him.

Luis Scola, PF 22 MIN | 3-5 FG | 1-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 7 PTS | -3 +/-

Wasn’t really fair tasking him with Bosh, but the match-up is the match-up. Did fine in man situations but struggled navigating pick-and-pops and didn’t bring his usual presence on the glass.

Jonas Valanciunas, C 28 MIN | 8-12 FG | 0-0 3FG | 1-2 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 17 PTS | -7 +/-

A great first half and generally a solid offensive game, he loses points for struggling on the glass and being mostly a non-factor as a help defender. Guarded Whiteside well one-on-one. Teammates completely ignored him in the second half.

Kyle Lowry, PG 37 MIN | 4-16 FG | 2-8 3FG | 5-6 FT | 6 REB | 8 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 15 PTS | -16 +/-

It’s been a tough stretch shooting the ball, even if he did a much better job creating for others Sunday than the last two times out. He might be trying to do too much, too, when the offense stalls out. Something looks off, whatever it is.

DeMar DeRozan, SG 36 MIN | 5-14 FG | 0-3 3FG | 6-6 FT | 1 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 6 TO | 16 PTS | -8 +/-

Struggled to get to the line early and did his best to get others involved off the bounce. Once the wheels started coming off, lost that mentality and went tunnel-vision trying to draw fouls. Six turnovers, woof.

Anthony Bennett, PF 7 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-1 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -8 +/-

Fairly empty garbage time minutes. The hope he eventually hits these open triples is fading.

Patrick Patterson, PF 15 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | -7 +/-

He’s not knocking down open looks. He’s not rebounding. His defensive impact is largely inconsistent. Any argument that he should be starting, for fit or otherwise, is probably dead at this point.

Bismack Biyombo, PF 15 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 3FG | 3-3 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 5 PTS | -14 +/-

Still love the effort and intensity he brings, but holy hell, these hands. He doesn’t have much business being on the floor when the offense is struggling, because teams are playing the Raptors as if it;s 4-on-5.

Terrence Ross, SF 20 MIN | 0-4 FG | 0-3 3FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 0 PTS | -15 +/-

Can we pass again here? Good god, what a thoroughly terrible performance for a second consecutive game. I’m at a loss for what the answer is here, because he’s missing wide open looks, clearly hesitating before doing so, and isn’t making up for it with defensive effort. In his fourth year, what gets the message across?

Lucas Nogueira, C 3 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 1-1 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 3 PTS | 0 +/-

Hey, Bebe sighting! A nice warm-up for a potential D-League assignment next week. That hair, man.

Delon Wright, PG 3 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -3 +/-

What do you say about two minutes of garbage time? He missed a shot and passed the ball. My brain hurt by this point.

Cory Joseph, PG 23 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 1 TO | 4 PTS | -15 +/-

A fairly passive offensive night, deferring to Lowry for the most part but at least hitting the defensive glass to try to contribute. Hardly his best defensive outing.

Norman Powell, SG 5 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | 0 +/-

I’d love to say Powell made Casey look smart for giving Ross the hook late in the second, but Casey didn’t feel that way. Powell hasn’t been awesome, but the defensive effort may be enough to warrant giving him a bit more run, if only as a message to Ross.

Dwane Casey

Look, you can’t pin a 20-point loss on a coach. I’m sorry, you just can’t. He basically conceded the game with his rotations early in the fourth quarter, and quibble with Ross’ minutes if you want, but what were his options tonight? He faces a real Sophie’s choice at backup two, three, and four right now.

Five Things We Saw

  1. I really, really, really, really, really, really like you, Justise Winslow.
  2. As bad as Sunday was, the Raptors shouldn’t rush Carroll back. Plantar fasciitis is far too big a risk to linger if not given the proper time to heal. Better to take the lumps now and get past it.
  3. 16 turnovers again. This is a recurring issue now. Equal parts Lowry and DeRozan trying to do too much when the offense starts faltering, Biyombo’s hands, and general miscommunication in tight space.
  4. Maybe if your big man is going to work all first half, you should get him more than one touch in the second half. Rather than, you know, conceding what was a 50-50 first-half match-up the second it tilts 55-45.
  5. No need to panic, everyone. They’re still 5-2 and went 2-2 on the road trip. It’s a tough last 49 minutes, but it happens.
