Recap | Box Score

L. Scola 11 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-3 3FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 2 PTS | -10 +/-Rebounded well, defended mediocrely, shot the ball quite poor.

J. Valanciunas 21 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 3FG | 7-8 FT | 8 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 13 PTS | -11 +/-Really aggressive offensively early (maybe a bit too much). His rim protection was solid though; blocked a shot, changed a couple others. Wasn’t a good match-up situation for him, but he played hard, and grinded out an admirable game considering the Hawks front-court.

K. Lowry 34 MIN | 6-15 FG | 2-6 3FG | 2-5 FT | 4 REB | 6 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 16 PTS | -6 +/-I…look…he didn’t have a terrible game per sey, but while he went tit for tat with Teague all night, Teague had a bigger impact on the game.

D. DeRozan 34 MIN | 7-24 FG | 0-2 3FG | 2-2 FT | 4 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 16 PTS | -10 +/-Every time he took it to the rack, someone was there to greet him, and more often than naught, there was the right amount of pressure for his shot to be affected (misses; lots and lots of misses) but not be able to draw enough contact to get to the line. 2-2 from the FT line…seems like a 2Pat line.

N. Powell 31 MIN | 4-8 FG | 2-4 3FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | -6 +/-He was due for a poor game…and to his credit he didn’t let an underwhelming start to the game affect his ability to end strong; I (I bet most of us did) really thought he was going to tie the game at 85 on that straight-away three…he obviously didn’t, but that just goes to show how highly he is regarded at the moment (at least by me).

P. Patterson 28 MIN | 1-3 FG | 1-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 3 PTS | -4 +/-Had the opportunity to really help with Millsap/Horford, you know, since he’s long, athletic, and agile for a big guy, but didn’t….he stunk…

J. Thompson 3 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +5 +/-+5 on the night (led the team!)…honestly didn’t know he even played until I glanced at the box score.

T. Ross 19 MIN | 2-5 FG | 2-3 3FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 6 PTS | -1 +/-Rebounded better than he shot the ball; Raptors really needed it to be the other way around.

D. Carroll 14 MIN | 2-4 FG | 1-1 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 4 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | +2 +/-DC IS BACK! 4stls and 5pts and a trey; I’d call that a successful return after missing 41 games or so.

L. Nogueira 5 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +2 +/-The 4th quarter comeback would not have happened without him; I’m putting that all on Bebe.

B. Biyombo 22 MIN | 3-8 FG | 0-0 3FG | 4-5 FT | 9 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 10 PTS | +1 +/-I’m advocating we bring back the missed bunnies tracker for Biz at RR. Love our boy, but it’s so infuriating to watch him get great opportunities around the rim only to put up a brick from 5 feet out. Rare night where he scored more points than he had rebounds FWIW. Defense was solid as per usual though.

C. Joseph 18 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 6 PTS | -2 +/-Instrumental in the 4th that

Dwane Casey
Didn’t seem like the team was focused to the start the game; so that’s on Casey. Hard to pin much else on him though. Was able to counter lineups and plays the Hawks threw at them, and play bench effectively to cut a one-time 14-point deficit into a 3-point one in the fourth quarter. That said, this game seemed out of the Raptors hands the entire game, and playing both Lowry and DeRozan 34 minutes seemed like 5-7 minutes too much (Cojo could have used more minutes for example).

Three Things We Saw

  1. The offense was offensive for most of the night; no ball movement lead to poor shot availability/selection, and obviously a bunch of ugly misses. To be fair, the Hawks defense rotated and swarmed something fierce, but the Raptors could/should have done more to get themselves some better looks.
  2. Raptors didn’t man up on defense enough. Switches off screens, rotations, everything was weak. Really would have liked to see a few Hawks get plowed over on a screen and roll situation.
  3. While both teams didn’t shoot particularly great, the Hawks were able to turn the Raptor brick-fest into 22 fast break points…yea…
