Gameday: Raptors @ Clippers, March 16

Let's make it 5 in a row.

Let’s make it 5 in a row.

A west coast swing that looked like it might send the Raptors tumbling farther away from the six seed has actually vaulted them closer to one of the vaunted, guaranteed playoff spots.

The last time the Raptors played the Clippers was shortly after they had lost Paul George, but similar to the Ja Morant-less game the Raptors played against the Grizzlies, the grit and the tenacity was overflowing from the Clips. Since then, the Clippers have still managed to hold onto supremacy in LA. Under Ty Lue, they’ve maximized everything they can on their roster, and executed with vigor. They’re still above .500, and they’re tough to beat at home.

For their part, the Raptors are looking for their 5th straight win. Fred VanVleet is still nursing his knee, and we patiently await for him to return to full health even if he’s been active in these games. Pascal Siakam is looking to string together 8-straight games of 20+ points, and considering the Raptors went to the ‘FVV’- Siakam pick n’ roll to eviscerate the Clippers down the stretch of their last matchup? I think there will be windows and players for him to attack. Scottie Barnes is also in terrific form. He’s making a late play for Rookie of the Year in what looks to be one of the best draft classes in some time. Every time he takes the floor he looks a little bit bigger, and the way he’s been able to pressure opposing teams in the post and via isolation continues to amaze and impress.

It should be interesting to see how the Raptors deal with the towering duo of Ivica Zubac and Isaiah Hartenstein. Both are massive presences around the rim on both sides of the floor. Both 7’1″. Zubac the overwhelmingly helpful rebounder, Hartenstein with juiced up block and steal rates, and mind numbing rim protection numbers. They’re an odd pair and could challenge the Raptors in a unique way. Tough to say who Nurse will opt to play: Precious or Khem? If I’m betting money? I think Khem gets the start.

Unfortunately, we won’t be getting a matchup vs. lovable former Raptor: Norman Powell. But, if you’re looking for a fun piece that compares and contrasts Powell with Gary Trent Jr.? Louis did a fantastic job here.

Strap in, and let’s get 5 in a row.
