Raptors assign Wright and Caboclo to D-League

Raptors' uber bill set to violate CBA.

The Toronto Raptors have assigned Delon Wright and Bruno Caboclo to Raptors 905 of the D-League, the team announced Monday.

The move is a little surprising, as D-League head coach Jesse Mermuys suggested to Raptors Republic on Friday that the two youngsters could stay with the parent club until Tuesday. It’s possible they get recalled following 905 practice to sit on the bench for Raptors-Lakers and then re-assigned, the benefit of having a team so close by.

We’ve covered these up-and-downs off pretty well by now – the team is handling things expertly, maximizing the practice time and in-game minutes for two players who need both. I won’t rehash the logic and the benefits, but rest assured the organization is on point with these maneuvers so far. Expect both in the lineup for the 905 on Wednesday and Friday, possibly with up-and-downs to double up on practices on Tuesday and Thursday.

While Lucas Nogueira is an early success story of the setup and Caboclo is gaining confidence, the 905 as a team continue to struggle. The success of the D-League isn’t measured by wins and losses or individual statistics, but for those rooting for the team for more than just the purposes of tracking the Raptors’ prospects, things are coming along slowly. Another full week at home to get back to hammering out the defensive system and trying to find a way to limit turnovers should help, and two games in three days will be a nice opportunity to try to correct mistakes immediately rather than being forced to ruminate with them for days.

As a reminder, the 905 are at the ACC for an 11 a.m. game on Friday.

Note: I had heard coach Jesse Mermuys’ name spelled as Murmuys in an article and tweet over the weekend. It’s changed now, but I feel like an idiot considering how many times I’ve written it and because, you know, that’s pretty unacceptable. Apologies to Mermuys and anyone who is now confused by the proper spelling.
