Luis Scola, PF 33 MIN | 8-14 FG | 0-1 3FG | 0-1 FT | 8 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 16 PTS | +16 +/- After a slow start, Scola’s savyness started to prevail. He ‘out-Spursed’ the Spurs with his craftiness and overall awareness on the court – taking charges, hitting shots, and taking it to the basket.
Terrence Ross, SF 27 MIN | 3-5 FG | 0-1 3FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 6 PTS | +11 +/- Pretty solid game from Ross. Nothing like his output against the Lakers, but he played within his game. The good news is this: He looks like a basketball player again.
Bismack Biyombo, C 26 MIN | 5-7 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-1 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | -3 +/- The moment that changed everything: Biyombo catches a pass in the post, and gracefully scores a hook shot. Everything we know about the universe was turned upside down. There was a period in the third quarter where the Spurs were grabbing five rebounds / possession, and Bismack was the only Raptor who was able to put up a fight. Solid / dreamy half-time interview.
Kyle Lowry, PG 37 MIN | 6-11 FG | 1-3 3FG | 6-6 FT | 5 REB | 8 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 4 TO | 19 PTS | +5 +/- This is a superstar, I’m not sure if there’s any other way to put it. There is a common trait among these players: Curry, Westbrook, Durant, Harden, James. When they shoot the ball – from anywhere on the court and with anyone on them – you still feel like they’re going to score the ball, no matter the degree of difficulty the shot possesses. I feel the same about Lowry now. High compliment.
DeMar DeRozan, SG 37 MIN | 10-15 FG | 0-0 3FG | 8-8 FT | 4 REB | 6 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 6 TO | 28 PTS | +3 +/- Phenomenal. He dominated the mid-range game, got others involved early, and took it to the basket at will. Even when his inner DeKobe was manifested, he still made those shots with a high degree of difficulty. Highly efficient night.
James Johnson, PF 16 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 2-2 FT | 3 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -3 +/- Solid. His minutes as of late have been really conducive. On defense, his rotations were inch-perfect and he made good plays on the offensive end.
Patrick Patterson, PF 34 MIN | 3-5 FG | 2-4 3FG | 2-2 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 10 PTS | -7 +/- Decisive. His first shot was an air ball, but it was pretty smooth from that point on. His defense was suffocating, and he hit some big shots. PatMan is back.
Cory Joseph, PG 30 MIN | 2-6 FG | 0-1 3FG | 2-2 FT | 0 REB | 4 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 6 PTS | -7 +/- Borderline A+. Dude came to play tonight. He gave Ginobili – and any poor soul who get switched on him – headaches all game with his quickness. His defense? Typically great.
Dwane Casey This was the most complete game all season. The Raptors were moving the ball from tip-off, took good shots, and the defense was exemplary on a night without DeMarre Carroll. The Raptors shot nearly 60% against the best defensive team in the league. |
Two Things We Saw
- Again, we need to reiterate how great the defense was tonight. Just flip through the Republic’s Twitter feed to revisit a couple defensive sets. The rotations were suffocative.
- The best part of this game – apart from DeRozan going off – was how much San Antonio struggled dealing with the Lowry – CoJo combo. The point guards were surgical tonight with their penetration, clinical with their scoring, staunch with their defense.
Where do these guys rank among the NBA’s point guard duos?
