Recap | Box Score
88Washington Wizards
Luis Scola, PF 20 MIN | 4-10 FG | 0-1 3FG | 3-3 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 11 PTS | +7 +/-

A quiet one aside from a flying and-one on a curl in the third quarter. Tough matchup for him when the Wizards went small but he held his own and did what he does.

James Johnson, PF 21 MIN | 4-6 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 9 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 8 PTS | +4 +/-

Was the typical solid Johnson game: He played great on-ball defense, made a few passes few forwards think to make, and scored efficiently when called on, but he had lapses in transition or off the ball and committed a pair of turnovers. This screencap isn’t just on him by any means, but what’s the whole team doing in transition here?

Jonas Valanciunas, C 30 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-0 3FG | 5-6 FT | 3 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 4 BLK | 6 TO | 7 PTS | -1 +/-

Had one of his worst halves of the season in the first but came out with much better minutes in the third quarter, particularly with respect to pick-and-roll defense. Struggled opposite Gortat on offense and on the glass, but he did fine as the rim-protector when anyone but Wall was coming in hot.

Kyle Lowry, PG 41 MIN | 8-18 FG | 3-6 3FG | 2-2 FT | 10 REB | 4 AST | 4 STL | 1 BLK | 6 TO | 21 PTS | +4 +/-

Gets a narrow edge over Wall for the second time in three meetings this season. Got hot to start the fourth as required, cracked down to help on the defensive glass with abandon all night, and created easy offense with aggressive steals on the other end. A great night for the one-two punch.

DeMar DeRozan, SG 40 MIN | 11-24 FG | 1-4 3FG | 12-13 FT | 8 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 35 PTS | +5 +/-

There’s really not enough to say about his performance. He started slow from the floor but was creating a great deal of the team’s offense through dribble-penetration breakdowns, and then he became unguardable in the second half. During the best stretch of his entire career, this is right up there with the best games he’s had. (This was a season high in points; his career high is 42 points, by the way.)

Patrick Patterson, PF 28 MIN | 0-2 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 0 PTS | +2 +/-

Played well defensively helping out on Nene and Dudley, hardly easy assignments. Seriously, if the grade seems high, go back and watch a few of his defensive possessions, he was everywhere. Loses points for a flagrant on Porter. And zero points in 28 minutes is tough. Gee, think his confidence is lacking right now?

Terrence Ross, SF 18 MIN | 3-4 FG | 1-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 7 PTS | +7 +/-

Was providing solid minutes on offense and decent, if spacey, defense. So, the usual for him, too. Then he hurt his lower back and left the game, threatening to render the Raptors very thin on the wing.

Bismack Biyombo, C 18 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 4 BLK | 1 TO | 0 PTS | +10 +/-

Really helped seal off the rim when the defense was set, eliminating the entire baseline. He struggled with this matchup last time out, if I remember right, but these were good minutes. He’s still making things tough on Joseph, but that might be on someone other than Biyombo to figure out.

Cory Joseph, PG 24 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-1 3FG | 2-2 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 8 PTS | +7 +/-

A few curious decisions dribbling out the clock against Sessions rather than attacking, but that’s symptomatic of the second-unit offense at times. Provided nice spot minutes on Wall and Sessions, a pair of guards that are tough to keep in front of you. Nice couple of bounce-back games for him.

Dwane Casey

Thought he called a few smart timeouts, namely the one early in the third to settle things and start a run. Responded early to Wizards fronting post-ups and jumping lanes by adding shooters. A couple of fun out-of-bounds plays, too.

Five Things We Saw

  1. All caveats apply with the quality of competition, but the Raptors have responded to Carroll’s absence with two of their best defensive showings of the season. Fun!

  2. It was necessary given the game flow, but it was another night with heavy minutes for Lowry and DeRozan. Hopefully the 76ers provide a reprieve, but I kind of doubt it.
  3. They hit five threes. If there’s a concern with Ross out, it’s that the team now has no wings who can hit triples regularly. Whatever the option – Joseph, Wright, Powell, Johnson, Bennett – none of them are going to require a defense to respect them. That’s going to make things tougher on Lowry and DeRozan.
  4. That might be premature. It’s a sore back, the Sixers are up next, and then the Raptors have one game in eight days. Breathe, Blake.
  5. John Wall just can’t shoot efficiently against the Raptors this year (22-of-68), it seems. He might be the most dangerous non-Curry player in transition in the NBA, though. Still, get out there and “Kyle Lowry #NBAVote” for the Raptors moving to 3-0 against the Wizards on the year.
