Just to recap the transactions around JJ:

  1. Raptors trade a 1st round pick to Chicago for James Johnson
  2. Raptors trade James Johnson to Sacramento for a 2nd round pick one year later

Annoying, right? At least we don’t have to watch him shoot jumpers anymore…

The selling points on the deal was removing some logjam at the three with Fields/Kleiza expecting to split duties, and saving some cap space ($2.8m).

Now all that is left is removing some of the logjam at 4/5, getting some value back for Calderon, and we can call it a summer.

  • Tonious35

I’ll miss the lower quality Shawn Marion-esque play from JJ, but him shooting 3s and jumpers was heading towards Jamario Moon territory.  And JJ was traded for a 27-28th pick (from Miami), so the loss is not terribly tragic.  Value I feel was 0.75 on the 1.00 in this trade.

    • Raps Loyalist

Agree about the 75 cents, especially when you consider that Sac’s 2nd rounder will probably land in the 30s (or roughly 10 spots lower than the pick we gave up to get him).  Loved JJ’s D, hustle, and rebounding off the bench but need to see BC’s follow-up with the cap space to know for sure if this was a good idea

Giving away James Johnson for nothing seems foolish to me. He could block shots, rebound and score inside, why not keep him on the bench for the inevitable injury that will occur to someone in the front court or for matchup purposes against bigger 3’s.  If they trade Calderon for nothing but a trade exception I’ll be even more disappointed in BC.  So what if guys aren’t thrilled having someone come in who plays their position – they still get paid to do their job.

    • Nilanka15

JJ seemed to be caught in no man’s land.  Not good enough to start, and not terrible enough to be a 3rd stringer.  Making matters worse is that he seems to think he’s the next Paul Pierce.

      • Destro

Wrong again…I acknowledged he had a good game, and youve already tried to twist the JJ argument into sumn retarded so i wont bother YOU got it and so do i so im GOOD !

            • Al_Oliver

Apparently it was at least one episode against Charlotte where he was yapping back at Casey and had to be somewhat restrained. Not a good way to earn minutes or curry favour with the coach.
I wouldn’t include the rumour of him showing up to practice “under the weather” as that is totally unsubstantiated

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

Getting something back would probably mean eating more of our cap space. Plus, he sucks anyway. He isn’t really a match up problem for other 3s, he can’t score or shoot the damn ball to respect him. He is an above average defender but not good enough for this team. Cap space is all we wanted and once BC gets another real good defensive SF (maybe Iguodala), nobody will complain about this trade.

  • tkfu

Yup, spot-on.  Sometimes an early 2nd round pick is better than a late first rounder due to the fact that 2nd rounders don’t have a guaranteed salary scale–early 2nd round is a great place to use a “stash” pick: draft a euro pro with potential and hold on to the rights to see if he improves, while not having any cap holds if you don’t feel like signing him.

    • AB7.38pt.on.CB4

100%. BC needs more flexibility going forward and saving $2.8 mil can be important if a R. Gay/Iggy type of player is available.

I liked JJ overall, DCasey had enough of him after 6 month: team always first

      • GameBreaker

I will guarantee you all we don’t get Iggy or Gay…people need to sail that ship, now. It’s not gonna happen. Which is why letting a guy like JJ go, for nothing, is an absolute WACK move!!!

lol @ defense HA HA HA

    • Brian B

basketball-wise he has the potential to be a spare part – not even a rotation player on a good team, because he is too inconsistent, lacks focus and is neither quite athletic enough to match up against a mobile perimeter player or strong enough to be defend bigger PF. To be a rotation player, he needs one elite skill, not just adequate sometimes in a few things.

More significantly, a slightly more athletic version of Kleiza, he is caught in a numbers game. Now 12 players under contract, need one spot for third PG tba.

Opening a roster spots creates potential flexibility further trades, or signing a spare free agent big as well as a true SF for the end of the bench or “microwave” scoring – though I’d rather see someone who can defend Pierce, James, Deng, Carmelo  etc without thinking they can shoot threes.

  • c_bcm

I am disappointed to see JJ go. I enjoyed watching him play. However, I do not watch the game from a technical standpoint so a lot of the effort issues and offensive mind-farts that he was apparently prone to were lost on me. I also do not have a handle on how his personality meshed with what the team was and where it was going.

So I will not criticize this move. I will trust that BC and DC are working together to make this team better, and this move is a step along that path.

  • Brian1957

Is this designed to create room to bid on Josh Childress? A BC type player if I ever saw one, but can he fit the casey mold?

    • Destro

Please DONT i just ate breakfast….

  • Nilanka15

IMO, the SF rotation is now set (unless a significant upgrade presents itself in Gay or Iggy).  Going after a Childress type would only create redundancy all over again.

    • Sam Holako

I’d rather keep JJ than bring in Childress.

      • CJT

I also got the feeling yesterday during the summer league game when they were talking to DC that Jose isnt going anywhere.  Just the way he phrased things.

        • Al_Oliver

Calderon isn’t going anywhere unless he is traded. Amnesty needs to be used by tomorrow and it won’t be used on José

    • sleepz

      Is it? Fields and Kleiza?

I could care less if they want to get rid of Johnson. He and Casey obviously had their issues during the year.

Only concern I have is he was one of the few players that actually, you know, improved last year which was supposed to be a year of evaluating the young players on the roster. If they don’t think he fits so be it. I did think he was active defensively.

      • Destro

Yessir…one of the few guys on this team that D up and lock people down and create turnovers into buckets…I also agree having an issue with Casey shouldnt allow you to give away that asset..How about the coach be the bigger man and leader and squash it internally as to prevent you having to make moves like this that are detrimental from a talent stand point…Why is the onus on the player ? The coach should bare the brunt of alot of this move…Since were all making assertions on what we think happened…I would say JJ had a problem with Casey holding HIM accountable and not certain oher players on this team….An issue i talked about last season having seen it from the stands and now its an issue that has led to a player outright bein given away….

        Thats not good business IMO

        • Nilanka15

This is all speculation.  We don’t know if this move had anything to do with the JJ/Casey “altercation” last season.

It probably has more to do with the fact that Johnson had no idea what do with the ball in his hands.

          • me

  • boshrawr

I liked James Johnson, I really did, but its obvious he had to go. the guy was in over his head, and took the fact that he was playing on a horriblr injury ridden team too seriously. his vision along with the vision of casesys for him vastly differed. Toronto doesn’t have many leaders in its locker room so the moment this situation presented itself it had to be dealt with. in order to build contendersits vital players understand their role to a tee, and whether or not they got value back on the trade is irrelevant to me. I like that Bryan and Casey are in this togethe and share a similar. vision, that is slightly reassuring to me.

  • Destro

Whats funny is id rather have JJ than both Kleiza’s bum ass and Fields….But no we give away JJ..are stuck with that fckn bum Kleiza and his pussified injury riddled ass and overpaid for another bum in Fields….This kinda shit irks you as a fan…IMO we GAVE away the best of the 3…and overpaid to sign two inferior bums…

        What i dont get is…..

        • Destro

The moves are frustrating as is,to add the fact that BC is completely contradicting his own BS speeches adds to that bitterness…Theres a point where as a fan you wish for the team to fail badly just so BC cant hide from it anymore and will be tossed in them bushes…

        • Lorenzo

          No.

Bayless and Johnson will both be 3rd stringers on any other team in the league. Raptor fans value them too much.

We had too many PGs and Swingmen, and somebody had gots to go. Although I will miss JJ, I loved that face he made.

          • me

Someone has to go,i’ll tell you who has to go it’s that fn bag of broken pasta

          • sleepz

Well what does that say about the team management and acquiring players as Johnson was the starter last year and Bayless was back-up pg?

Is it the fans who value them to much or the GM who acquires them and they are playing key roles on the team?

Then we wonder why they have been in the lottery the past 4 years.

            • Lorenzo

              I agree. It’s a bit of both.

But you have to understand, these teams since Bosh’s departure were clearly not built for wins. They were built for roster evaluation. To see who can play. I think we did that poorly though, should’ve given Ed, JJ, Bayless and Alabi more playing time.

“Then we wonder why they have been in the lottery the past 4 years.”

              Who’s wondering that?

  • 2damkule

cool…opens up the door to sign khandor’s wet dream (RODNEY FUCKING CARNEY, PEOPLE!!).

  • 2damkule

i hate the idea of giving him away for ‘nothing,’ but that’s what he was acquired for (pretty much the same draft slot – late first is generally equal to an early 2nd, with the caveat that there’s more flexibility in signing 2nd round guys).  you have to think that this is a precursor to something else, so don’t necessarily judge it until the other shoe drops.  i’m generally pretty hard on BC, but i’m guessing that they saw in JJ a guy who just wasn’t going to develop into a heavy rotation guy (too limited offensively), and if he was a headache last year, why go through the potential for that coming up again (with an even younger roster)?  sometimes, cutting bait & getting ‘nothing’ for a ‘problem’ player who’s limited in some pretty significant areas can improve things.

    • Nilanka15

      Agreed.

Although Johnson improved offensively last year, he was still far below being considered a reliable option.  He shot 30.8% beyond 9 feet last season.  Just atrocious.

The blocks and steals are nice, but many came from the weak side, and didn’t accurately portray Johnson’s ability to guard his own man.

  • Bendit

JJ is also on his last year with a cap hold of nearly 4 mill. as a rfa. Thats a lot tied up for part timer especially with the coach issues. Rather than have a Bayless type ending next year they get something for him now.

  • p00ka

Another example of a guy who’s physically gifted, but who hasn’t got his mind into a team game yet, maybe never will. The guy went rogue at both ends of the court far too often. Yeah, he’d get a help side block on one possession, but then get caught out of position (trying to repeat the help side hero?) the next 3 possessions. Not a Casey guy. That 2nd rounder is likely the best they could do without taking back salary of someone worse. Good luck to him, but the Raps aren’t the first team, and likely not the last, to send his “potential” packing.

  • Rye247

I thoroughly don’t understand why anyone thinks JJ should get playing time in the NBA.  He’s AWFUL!  Getting a 2nd rounder without having to take back anyone elses paid garbage is great.  You guys with your distorted perceptions are crazy thinking our awful players are somehow worth something more to anyone else.  Jose is the only commodity of any value on the market.  It’s a shame he couldn’t have been packaged somehow in a S&T for Batum.

    • Ryan

Getting a 2nd round pick without having to take anything back is great. Giving up a 1st rounder and turning it into a 2nd rounder the next year is not.

      • Dobsully

        Not really.
Raptors took a chance on him.
If things don’t work out cut your losses.
The fact that a 2nd string player is giving a coach problems isn’t good.

  • ad

Yeah sure, they can call it a summer if you want to watch a 35 win team at most. They still need a legit sf. I would package the 2nd rder in a trade for an iggy type. Also, they should amnesty a johnson because nobody will take that brutal contract back in a trade.
They will have close to 10m in cap room if they amnesty him which is not bad. They could absorb that figure in a trade to help a team like phi or mem shed salary. Of course, i have zero faith in BC to make anything significant happen. He will just continue making pointless minor transactions and trying to sell how significantly improved the team is. Which it is not especially if derozan and bargs are still the core. I would honestly trade derozan for a good SF. I dont see any all star potential in him. Unfortunately, BC likely doesnt see it that way.

  • j bean

Usually guys are traded for what the market dictates. If NBA scouts and GM’s really liked JJ as much as his fans here on RR something more would’ve been offered. I doubt Collangelo turned down someone that makes the team better. If there isn’t much interest you make the best move you can. The fact is he was gonna be bench filler behind Kleiza and Fields.
Same with Jose. We don’t see the demand from other teams considering how highly valued he is by his fans here.

Anyone that watched the Summer League game lastnight and heard the interview with Dwayne Casey knows that Jose will be here till the deadline. DC said he will come off the bench and it was more of Joses agents  that wanted him traded not jose himself. DC said Jose will be solid coming off the bench for them and iwll help them imrpoove the younger players.

    • j bean

Calderon’s agent did not say Jose was upset and wanted a trade unless Jose told him that. Do you really think agents publicly try to initiate trades without the consent of their player?

  • John

Sam you hit this one of the head, we bought high and sold low for JJ.
In any other business , this is the definition of the failure but in Raptor land, the HERD will support their so called Shepherd and will follow him to the dooms day.

    • Nilanka15

Is there a significant difference between the 27th pick we used to acquire Johnson, and the 30-37th pick we got in return (along with $3 million in cap space)?

I don’t see a “buy high, sell low” transaction here.  It seems pretty equal.

      • mountio

I agree. I actually like Johnson quite a bit and would have preffered to give him playing time over Fields or LK .. but LK not tradeable and we are stuck with Fields .. so I think this is about resonable market value for JJ. I think he will improve .. although playnig with the misfits in Sactown .. his bad habits might be accentuated…

        • John

Based on the Herd in RR last year and the herd lead sheep Matt52, JJ was the 2nd coming of Pippen !!! What happened to all those noise !!

Some of us here said that we paid too much for this guy when we got him from Chicago and his value is the same as a 2nd round pick around the league which means ZERO !!!

But the Herd Cheered and called it master piece for BC on converting a 1st round pick to a capable player like JJ 😉

          • j bean

There are lots of 27th picks who haven’t had as good a career as JJ and he could still stick around for another contract or two. It wasn’t an atrocious move on Colangelo’s part and JJ did improve his play while here. I didn’t see the posts calling it a masterpiece. I thought it was mostly considered a good move but not a game breaker one way or the other.

      • John

        Yes there is.

There is 10 spot difference and that makes a huge difference when smart people are in charge of working the draft picks.
The stats also back this as there are higher % of player who have/had successful careers in NBA who were drafted in the late first round in comparison to players when who were drafted in the 2nd round.

        • sleepz

I would also prefer a late first rounder than an early second rounder.

          • Luca

Ditto, nothing like missing out on your guy for what translates into peanuts in the grand sceme of things.

Give me a late first over an early 2nd anyday.

          • CJT

smaller salary, and 3 million towards the cap?  seems pretty equal to me.  Specially at that level of the draft.

        • Nilanka15

An idea floating around is that late 1st round picks are actually the worst rookie-scale contracts possible.  You’re essentially handing out guaranteed money to players who only possess 2nd round talent.

Like you suggested, this can be offset based on the quality of one’s scouting department, but unless we’re the Spurs, I don’t see the Johnson deal as a bad one.

          • Destro

Except you dont know where that 1st round pick is going to land….

  • FLUXLAND

Somewhere, AltRaps sheds a tear, as he bids adieu to Spaghetti Hair.

  • Luca

Say what you will about JJ’s deficiencies, but this team just got weaker in the toughness and defensive department.

Until BC adds the proper beef and toughness at the 4/5 this team will always be in no man’s land.

I don’t mind the JJ move as there were issues in the locker room, but how we have been so weak inside defensively for this long is bothersome.  I like A.Johnson but he’s an undersized 5 with Bargnani playing so far away from the basket.  Maybe JV is that guy, but if I was a betting man, I’ll bet the rookie will play like a rookie and not solve anything this upcoming year.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

I bet the rookie will play like a rookie? No shit.

      • RapthoseLeafs

         I`m in ….. how much.

        lol
        .

    • RapthoseLeafs

[” Until BC adds the proper beef and toughness at the 4/5 this team will always be in no man’s land..”  ]

That remains to be seen for this season.

Acy seems like the Reggie type. He could become a fan favourite.
And if Kleiza`s body allows him to play his aggressive style once again – a style he seems to enjoy – then Raptors will have toughness at the 4 role. With some spillage into the SF spot along the way.

For the 5 spot, Gray will add the big body whenever it`s required.

      .

  • Rjp981

On any other team, this would barely make the news. He’s a mediocre player and people are making a big deal about it because we don’t have much better.

    • Luca

      Don’t disagree.

      • Marc

looool, leave that to Matt52 and the herd on the board, they will find a reason to make this one an attractive move and easy to masturbate to 😉

  • Brain Colangelo

I would have preferred to have James Johnson on his small contract than Landry Fields on his (relatively) big one.  I give the Raptors a D in addressing the small forward position this offseason.

Additionally, now the Raptors are even less well equipped to guard the SFs in their conference (LeBron, Carmelo, Paul Pierce).  Not that JJ was the answer, but at least he had some of the tools to guard them.  Instead, we have Kleiza, DeRozan and Ross to back up Fields.

This will get ugly.  The raps will lose a lot of games.  Houston will get a good pick.  Who could we have gotten if we had amnestied Kleiza, not signed fields and then moved JJs salary?  Surely someone much, much better than Landry Fields.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

The offseason isn’t even done yet. You can’t give a grade yet. Lets see till the offseason is completely finished and the Calderon situation is handled till we give a grade. We still got cap space left. Relax

      • Brain Colangelo

James Johnson wasn’t good but he was fun to watch.  On a team that wasn’t good and most nights was unwatchable, James Johnson stood out.  This year’s team looks only slightly better and likely less watchable.

If things change I will upgrade my grade.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

He was fun to watch? A guy chucking bricks was fun to watch. Really? Nobody stood out. You got to be insane to say this team is slightly better than last year. Upgrade at point guard with borderline all-star point guard. Deeper at the swing position (Ross, Fields). Bringing in JV. And an actual training camp for this team. I don’t know what changes your expecting. Bargnani gone? He was playing well before the injury. He could have been an all-star in an weak eastern conference. Give him a chance. An extra small forward would be fine but he BC has done alright besides the Fields contract.

          • Brain Colangelo

            1. Most of the team chucked bricks, why were JJ’s bricks unique?

            2. Who’s to say that fields and Ross will improve the wing position?

            3. Every team gets a training camp this year. We need it more than others because we may have 3 new starters.

            Colour me unimpressed.

            • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

Because he thinks he is a scorer and should carry the load but he sucks, thats why they were unique. It was his attitude and mindset every night. If you can’t hit jumpers, take it to the hole or focus your energy on the defensive end. And I didn’t see that night in and night out. Too inconsistant. With Fields and Ross, at least you have better shooting and Fields is a great rebounder for a guard, which people tend to overlook. And with regard to the training camp, I’m not saying we need it more than others, its just great to have a full training camp to fully implement Casey’s defensive system instead of last season where every team had to rush everything. I sure JV as a rookie would like full training camp, instead of a rushed one, and would like to learn what the hell the Raptor team wants to run this season.

              • Brain Colangelo

JJ was a great rebounder for an SF. That means more than fields being a great rebounder as an SG, considering fields won’t play that position for us.

The waste of cap space is the key – I wouldn’t make this point if fields contract didn’t suck.

                • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

I hate Fields contract as well but he can play the SF if he has to and I rather have him than JJ right now. We are bound to make another move to get a SF and this trade was necessary to make.

                • Brain Colangelo

I can play the 3 if I have to but the NBA would prove that I don’t have enough size or talent to start. Neither does Landry Fields. Guess which of us has the $19m contract.

                • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

Did I not say I don’t like Fields contract stupid. Why bring it up, but clearly he is better than Johnson. Johnson is not a starting SF and as a bench player with Kleiza already locked wouldn’t make sense. Plus, he sucks. And Fields is 6″7, he can play the SF spot but I see BC having something planned and I know he ain’t done. With Johnson’s attitude, he would soak like a bitch on the bench.

          • Pimbletts

            Give Bargs a chance?

            • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

Everyone is saying trade him and he is shit. I think he was playing at a high level before the injury. Everyone can say he stays at the three point line but who cares. He is a mismatch for every center in the league. Plus, he puts the ball on the floor pretty well for a 7ft as well. He has got to improve the defensive rebounding and we all know that. But his one on one defense is solid. Help defense can improve but under an full training camp with Casey, I can see improvement.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/TRPH647AXY5T5XHXI2AFSG3XHA OvertheWall

Fields, DD, and Ross can all share time at the 3 if needed.  No harm done.  I won’t be grinding my teeth any more JJ’s shot selection.
Now, please get rid of Bargnani, and I will be on cloud #9.  Forget his defence and rebounding, his shot selection and lack of court vision is even worse than JJ; well, it seems so, because he has no defence to make up for it, whereas JJ does.

Can we get a James Johnson’s Raptor Career Eulogy?

  • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

BC is still pissing on fans calling it rainwater, shitting on fans calling it Kobe steak.lmfao

BC is trading 1st round picks for 2nd round picks-wow, and some people act like it’s all good up in here.

What’s left on the Rap’s roster from the CB transaction?????

I remember when BC initially acquired JJ alot of people up in here were all saying that the 27th pick in said draft wouldn’t have a player better than JJ available there but then Miami re-acquires the pick and drafts rights to Norris Cole an excellent back up pg for Miami.

People were saying JJ is the answer at SF and all that good ol’ stuff that the BC kool aid drinkers say whenever BC makes a move no matter the basketball logic behind it.

JJ had to go as Fields is BC’s big f/a acqusition this off seaosn and he needs to have a direct line to start and JJ might have outplayed him for that SF spot- even though LFields has played mostly SG in his career.

Casey is another BC puppet coach- we are going to demand that AB rebound he’s still 7ft tall- how did that 2 rebs per Q work out?lol

AB will do he’s same ol’ shit in 2012/13- hang out at the 3pt line while playing half ass defense- if he can stay healthy, even during his fable 13 GAME stretch after 6 seasons he was palying half ass defense letting palyers have lay up lines at the rim and slow on rotations.

Reminded me of when Sam got fired AB played hard for a couple of weeks then went back to his same ol’ lackidasical self just like the move to PF last season he’s got to play hard to start off in order to fool some folks and give his fanboys some hope aka AB dope.

After letting Bayless walk away for nothing, trading Bosa (tank) for a 2nd round pick to clear cap space for a pre draft day trade that never happened but won’t amnesty Jose to clear 10 million in cap space instead let him be the back up and cause another PG Controversy (if a trade doesn’t happens for another useless TPE) with Jose being made out as the good guy in the TDot media- throw up.

Funny how some people try to rationalize away every BC move as beneficial to the oganization no matter the facts to the contrary.

Wait until Big Val starts to struggle against NBA competition- what will be the excuse (pr spin) by then- 5 years?

    • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

      **28th draft pick.

    • Dc

Hopefully bc gets fired for all these terrible moves he’s made. Can’t wait till next year and a real gm with a real backbone blows This whole piece of crap up and does a proper rebuild starting with getting rid of mr13 game goat MVP mr.untouchable Andrea bargnani. Of course said gm won’t have a draft pick cuz bc sent a big old final fuck you to this franchise with that pick going to Houston. How can bc say that fields is a better player then jj? If anything fields is the same player except less athletic. Bc again getting caught by other gms playing checkers why their playing chess.

  • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

Just say it like how it is, this move is done to make room for Landry Fields.

BC would’ve traded JJ before waiting for the Knicks to reply on the Fields offer sheet if he was such a cancer on the team.

What do you do in this situation?

Make yourself look good and make the overpaid scrub look better than the underpaid player.

Make room for overpaid scrubs, and trade away the rest.

    • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

***I got this quote from another forum but I agree with it fully!!!

  • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

2 years after the fact CB is a NBA champ while BC has nothing left at all from the CB transaction……wow.

Riley schooled BC big time and BC is still making messed up decisions even with the addition of Stefanski aka The Tackler.smh

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

Wow why is everyone making out James Johnson to be such a good player. He sucks, plain and simple. Ohh he averaged 9 pts on a team where we had no other SFs to compete with. The guy is inconsistant and doesn’t bring the consistant defense night in and night out. Sure, he had games where he was good and I saw glimpses of what he can do. But I saw times of immaturity and he plain, cannot shoot the fucking ball and handle the ball. Clean house and see what BC does next. We are overacting so much about trading a shitbox. We got more capspace and lets hope we can get a quality SF through trading Calderon.

    • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

BC is looking for a TPE for Jose……

You should be thankful for TPEs.  Without them, you wouldn’t have anything to post about.

  • CZ

There’s no point going back and forth on whether or not JJ should have been traded.
All I can do is hope that BC and whoever else are making these decisions are doing it so that they can finally work towards getting a player who the rest of the league actually recognizes and has some actual star player quality about him.

But the current streak of BC shows otherwise.

  • Sheptor

A big trade has to be coming or this will turn out to be a wrong move. Not because I have to see JJ in a raptors uniform but because he would have been nice to throw in with Calderon to get the REAL sf everyone thinks is out there. Instead I believe that the move was made to absorb some of the LANDRY contract. We will not get a sf this offseason! Instead we will trade Calderon to a contender and in exchange receive an inferior pg and maybe a pick. The only way Calderon yields anything better is to throw in Amir (another overpriced bench guy) and that isn’t likely to happen. So maybe ED? Who knows? JJ was obviously the odd man out as it was and still is very unlikely LK moves because he can speak lithuanian. Landry Fields is a SG but will stretch to 3. The only other play that could be coming is a DeRozan/Calderon/Ed type of deal for a sf moving Fields to Sg with Ross as backup. DeRozan is not untouchable even now. In my mind there is still a jam at the 2 since we all believe Landry is a stretch 3 and Kleiza is not a starter.

    • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

      WTF is a stretch 3???lmfao

      • Sheptor

You’re obviously the biggest troll here so I’m surprised I’m even clarifying myself. All I mean is that he’s a 2 who could possibly play the 3 but it would be a stretch to do so since he isn’t 6’8 with a crazy wingspan etc..etc.. a la Rudy gay or Danny Granger. I do realize the term “Stretch” is usually reserved for someone who spreads the floor like Bargs but you know what I meant..”BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go..Gots2go”

        • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

It’s almost as if you got caught with your pants down around your ankles holding a bag full off candy in the bushes outside of the neighborhood elementary school at recess time- nothing that you say can clarify that bullchit to me- all the best.lol

  • verbatim

Was the 2.8 mil part of a larger plan?  Why does it seem like BC makes decisions ad hoc?  Where can you get a serviceable bench player like James Johnson for that kind of money?

  • jlongs

What this tells me is they (management) can handle waiting for players who underperform for years and years to maybe finally reach their potential, but they have little to no patience when it comes to players with personalities/attitudes clashing with them/their philosophies. Which technically really isn’t a bad thing.

As much as I hate to see JJ go, if they believe that he’s hopeless in the head and in the heart, then I can roll with that. I just wish they weren’t so extreme about it when it came to physical skills as well. Took 6 years for Bargs, 3 for Derozan, and now 2 for Ed Davis. And we’re slowly counting the years of mediocreness and suckiness until one of them finally reaches his potential.

    • guest

The difference in Derozan, Bargs and Ed is that they were Coangelo’s draft picks.  Giving up on them is basically saying he made bad decisions in selecting them when he did.  If he can’t get free agents, can’t get a team to the playoffs and on top of it does poorly in the draft, he’s done. ( I have watched the summer league games and I don’t think Ross has justified where he was drafted)  As a result, we keep waiting for the development of Brian’s draft picks.  If Jose continues to push back on not wanting to stay in Toronto, it should be the thing that Coangelo can’t spin.  He screwed up. Going after Nash was not about basketball, it was about saving his ass with a hometown hero, he doubled down with Fields and then shit his pants thinking Jose would backup Lowry.  This summer will be his undoing.

      • Theswirsky

Great post.  But I don’t think this summer will be his undoing it will be the Raptors.

Colangelo will get his new contract if they make the playoffs this season – but he’s mortgaged the Raptors future for it.

        • p00ka

lol, “mortgaged the Raptors future for it”

How did he do that? 1 draft pick?

          • CJT

This whole thread is like watching 13 year old girls upset about drama in grade 8.  It’s James Johnson.  Not Magic Johnson.  He is another typical NBA dude, who was the best player at his highschool, decent college player and thinks that he is still that standout player from grade 10.

            • Destro

No the 13 yr old girls in here keep mentioning the 13 games…

              • CJT

point being there is way too much drama for a move that is so inconsequencial.  There are 150 angry posts about a guy who definitely had some nice plays, but wasn’t a consistent impact player on one of the 10 worst teams in the league.  I will always love that he posterized Blake Griffin though.

                • Destro

Giving away a player that cost you a 1st rounder is worth talking about…

I know it’s off topic but what has happened to Alan Anderson? He played really well last season and I thought he would be on the summer league team at least. I figured you guys would know for sure

    • Nilanka15

The last thing we need is more wing players.

unless we somehow land a stud wing player, then that is exactly what we need!!

I already mentioned on a post what a bunch of douche-baggy pricks you are dissing a guy that played his heart out for Toronto.  He was the team’s defensive leader and his offensive game was starting to develop.  Karma is going to bite you guys on the ass when you watch Bayless and Johnson tear it up for their respective team while you guys sit on your asses and gripe about Kyle Lowry and Landry Fields not playing up to expectations.

This is what I will use to measure Big Val with:

    Success  > = 12 pt and 9 rbs
    OK         >= 8 pt  and  7 rbs
    Failure    Anything under
