This was rumoured a while back (forum thread), but now it’s pretty much official.
An official announcement is expected later Tuesday about Toronto’s hiring of Jeff Weltman, former assistant general manager of the Bucks.
Weltman will join Masai Ujiri in the Raptors’ front office. Ujiri, named the NBA executive of the year for his work last season with the Denver Nuggets, was hired as Toronto’s general manager in June. Ujiri had served as Toronto’s assistant GM for three seasons before going to Denver in 2010.
Weltman worked the last five years with the Bucks as a trusted adviser to Milwaukee general manager John Hammond. Weltman was one of the first people Hammond hired in 2008 when the Bucks chose Hammond to replace Larry Harris as general manager.
Weltman is known for his ability to scout talent and he also worked closely with Hammond on salary cap issues and structuring player contracts.
During the past few weeks Weltman was absent as the Bucks conducted their final player workouts and preparation for the NBA draft.
In short, this man makes Steve Fruitman expendable.
