Have to say that compared to the hip hop I grew up with — Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Pharcyde, etc. etc. — this auto-tuned garbage is godawful. From the weak lyrics, to the flaccid beats, to the lack of musical creativity, I feel truly sorry for today’s generation. And yes I know there are diamonds in the rough out there (People Under the Stairs, Oddisee, Toronto’s own Theo3) but they are in the unfortunate minority. Just terrible.
Preach man. The only hip-hop I follow these days are Atmosphere, Classified and anything coming from members of Soulquarians.
you sound like an old hippie complaining that nobody makes real rock like they did in the 60’s anymore
I definitely feel sorry for you if you believe this auto-tuned faux-rap garbage that pollutes the airwaves and headphones of the youth of today is a sign of progress.
And yes, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath are far better than any “rock” released over the past 40 years. That you apparently dispute this fact speaks volumes to your lack of musical intelligence.
That’s because they don’t make rock like they did in the 60’s no more. That was the creme de la creme. You can’t dispute the fact that there was a golden age of rap. Not all the shit out there is wack but its close.
Yess the Pharcyde was actually sooo sick. Meek is also aight.
Don’t forget Common, the Roots and leaders of the new school! Yep I must agree this modern hip hop
Is weak thanks to the likes of Jay Z and Diddy. It’s all about materialism. Hey Lou haven’t you heard? “The love of money is the root of all evil.”
For sure YAHsaves777, can’t forget those guys; Roots was one of my favourite concerts ever back in 1999 (Things Fall Apart tour). I could also easily include DJ Premier/Gangstarr, Souls of Mischief, Big L, Jeru, The Coup, it goes on and on.
Funny you mention Jay-Z and Diddy; their first two releases (Biggie’s first album) were classics; then it was all downhill. I remember reading an interview soon after “Reasonable Doubt” came out that Jay-Z chose to simplify his flow and dumb down his lyrics to sell more records. Sigh.
Lol @ the beastie boys. Just because something doesn’t sell doesn’t make it good. Just because something used to sell doesn’t make it good. In my opinion, if bigging up the Adams is your way of recognizing what’s good hip hop, I think that you are judging from the heights of a mighty precarious horse.
That said, opinions on music are like holes. Everybody’s got them. And I don’t think your or my judgment is going to change any one’s mind. So let Mr. Williams live!
Telib Kweli and Gangstarr were wicked too. And a little Pharoahe Monch and Raekwon > F*** i’m gonna go on Youtube for like 2 hours now…
Stick to bball Lou, that just plain sucked. Yup, keep your day job
I’m sorry but did the headlines say that he could spit?
This is really why I stopped listening to Rap music ! Stupid lyrics..and zero talent!! I blame this on P diddy and Mase..they both started this garbage
He raps about money. Yay!
New headline: Lou Williams the RAPtor with a weak RAP
At least better than Webber and Iverson.
“I was sleeping in class, missing the lessons”
When your kid stumbles upon this one day on youtube, what you gonna tell her Lou
Notice how the smart ones handled their money best in the league best anyways, especially when their playing days were over
I also don’t understand this new trend of constantly telling people how humble they are
If you remind people how humble you are, you aren’t humble lol
His instagram is littered with it. I’ve always been a fan of his game and like having him on my squad, I’m just not feeling his attitude
