Luis Scola, PF 18 MIN | 2-7 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 4 PTS | -12 +/- Was entirely incapable of sticking with C.J. Miles. That was predictable, but it’s concerning that he has no utility against stretchier lineups.
Terrence Ross, SF 31 MIN | 4-11 FG | 2-6 3FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | -6 +/- Padded his numbers some in crunch time. Started out defending well and rebounding to account but devolved into his customary spacey defense late.
Bismack Biyombo, C 31 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-0 3FG | 7-8 FT | 13 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 3 TO | 9 PTS | -6 +/- Hit the glass like a beast and nailed his free throws. Nice counter as center in small groups to Pacers’ 4-out-and-a-C. Still allows teams to put way too much pressure on PG in pick-and-roll.
Kyle Lowry, PG 34 MIN | 7-14 FG | 2-5 3FG | 4-4 FT | 2 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 20 PTS | -10 +/- Was visibly frustrated due to a few ticky-tack fouls and, probably, having to carry the load once again. Mostly played fine, if sloppy by his standards, but I’m very concerned about growing fatigue.
DeMar DeRozan, SG 38 MIN | 7-18 FG | 2-4 3FG | 4-5 FT | 5 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 20 PTS | -11 +/- George is an impossible two-way match-up and Pacers didn’t switch freely despite best efforts. The threes are nice, at least. Inexcusably played 38 minutes again.
Anthony Bennett, PF 3 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +9 +/- Really wanted to get his shots off in garbage time, but you earn that right with offensive boards.
James Johnson, PF 19 MIN | 2-5 FG | 0-2 3FG | 4-4 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 8 PTS | -7 +/- Not his best outing, though asking him to take two threes is ill-advised, anyway. Take what they give you, I guess. Hounded George well enough when tasked with it. Pretty ho-hum game by his standards.
Patrick Patterson, PF 23 MIN | 3-6 FG | 3-6 3FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 9 PTS | -29 +/- Somehow a -29 in 23 minutes. Concerning approach from Indy: They were shading wayyyy off of him on threes, with Patterson remaining somewhat hesitant letting fly and looking shaky putting it on the floor. Hopefully seeing 3 go through the hoop helps the flow.
Lucas Nogueira, C 8 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 0 PTS | -5 +/- Hate to do it to him, but Nogueira has lost the momentum he had pre-injury. A couple of bad offensive fouls and a non-factor on the glass.
Cory Joseph, PG 28 MIN | 0-6 FG | 0-1 3FG | 3-4 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 3 PTS | -10 +/- Kills me to do this, too, but Joseph finally turned in a bad game. He didn’t play particularly well Sunday, either, and the two days off will do him well. Feels so weird seeing him make simple mistakes.
Norman Powell, SG 7 MIN | 2-5 FG | 1-2 3FG | 0-1 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | +7 +/- Provided some nice energy and hit the offensive glass. Might be a bit of bias in me wanting to see what he could do with a few more minutes (the team’s lack of shooting makes this idea difficult), but I thought he was more fine than most.
Dwane Casey Look, you can’t really hang a 16-point loss on the coach, nor can you really hang a 101-64 closing run on him. That’s the players playing poorly. I will, however, put it on him some for DeRozan and Lowry looking gassed and playing a combined 72 minutes once again. How long he left them in without waiving the white flag is, I guess, admirable, but I’d lean “stubborn” and “reckless.” Sometimes you’ve gotta take an L and live to fight another day. |
Five Things We Saw
- A 26-5 run. Unbelievable.
- A 39-4 run. That really became a 101-64 run. Unbelievable.
- How you gonna grab 15 offensive rebounds and still only shoot 37.3 percent on twos?
- The Raptors looked gassed. 21 turnovers isn’t them.
- They’re playing without two starters, with two guys in the D-League, and with two more than Casey doesn’t seem to trust. That’s the reality, and it’s an excuse, I guess, for playing guys heavy minutes. But damn, it is concerning. You can’t have two guys in the top-seven in total minutes and expect to stay fresh and healthy over 82 games.
