Trade Deadline Open Thread: Raptors land Tucker

Check back often throughout the day.

3:02 – The Raptors are getting PJ Tucker. Story coming.

2:48 p.m. PRAISE SHAMMGOD! Paul George is staying the hell put.

2:44 p.m. The Bulls are sending Doug McDermott and Taj Gibson to OKC for a Cameron Payne package, Shams Caharania reports. Okay, then. Sure seems to make the Bulls worse in the moment, and I say this as a Payne fan. Milwaukee is also sending Roy Hibbert to Denver.

2:31 p.m. Not Raptors related,  but if you’re a fantasy player, go grab K.J. McDaniels. He’s been dealt to the Nets to free up cap space for Houston, per Woj.

2:30 p.m. Need more help easing your George-to-Boston concerns? Sam Amick provides this note, which we’ve heard before but which may be scaring teams off a year and change

2:10 p.m. Here’s an interesting note from, Stein: The Nuggets made a “monster” offer for Paul George today. It’s hard not to wonder if maybe their interest in George slowed traction down on Chandler, as their focus was elsewhere.

1:46 p.m. Just as an update, Lowry missed practice due to a travel/flight issue and DeRozan missed it due to a funeral, per Eric Smith.

1:23 p.m. It is almost certainly nothing for Raptors fans to think on, but Windhorst added that the Pacers are looking to clear roster spots. IF, and this is a massive IF, that’s the case, I would be extremely interested in C.J. Miles as an addition for the Raptors. In all likelihood, if clearing space was related to sending George to the Celtics, it would probably be implied that the Pacers won’t then turn around and fortify Toronto. But hey, let me dream. Miles is great.

And here’s something to make you feel better about the George rumor, courtesy my son William Lou:

1:10 p.m.Well, here’s some garbage news for you:

On the bright side, Woj assures us that there is “no significant traction,” but I’ll be over here panicking at the thought of George on the Celtics. There’s not much the Raptors could do in response, either – it might push them to be more aggressive on a Tucker/Chandler type, but they’ve made their big acquisition already, and they don’t have the assets to get involved on Butler or George (unless they were willing to move DeRozan, maybe, which they’re not going to do).

So, yeah….cross your fingers talks hit a snag. A hard one. Fast.

12:55 p.m. It’s quieted down a bit, which likely means executives are no longer answering calls/texts from reporters as things get tight heading to the deadline. The only thing that’s really out there is a report that the Raptors might be interested in Tyson Chandler, too, in a P.J. Tucker deal, a move that would require Jonas Valanciunas to be outbound. The source is not on my trusted sources list, so I’m passing it on but not giving it a ton of consideration as of yet.

Also, Lowry and DeRozan were excused from practice again today, which is probably not a big deal but won’t help with chemistry as they try to get Serge Ibaka acclimated.

12:21 p.m. I am starving. If I step out the door to grab lunch, the Raptors will make a trade, right? Should I try it? Can I spare 15 minutes?

12 p.m. Per Ramona Shelburne, the Celtics have let teams know their Nets picks are in play for players they really like. Woj says that included the Pacers and Paul George. David Aldridge, meanwhile, says the Sixers are likely to re-route Bogut, and the Celtics are a possibility. In other words, Boston is getting busy. The Cavs are monitoring Bogut, too, says Chris Haynes.

11:45 a.m. Thgis isn’t Raptors related, but Woj tweeted that the Sixers were getting close to dealing Nerlens Noel to the Mavericks, then deleted it. He put the pin back in the grenade! He tweeted it again: Noel is off to Dallas for Justin Anderson, Andrew Bogut, and a first-round pick. Bogut seems a likely candidate to be bought out, and he would then headline the buyout market.

11:15 a.m. Here are some Chandler frameworks that work from a salary perspective (and assuming the Nuggets must get a first back, since everyone seems quite excited about this one.

Sullinger, Joseph, and a 1st

Sullinger, Poeltl, and a 1st

Sullinger, Nogueira, and a 1st

Sullinger, Caboclo, one of Wright/Siakam/Powell/VanVleet, and a 1st

Sullinger, Wright, one of Siakam/Powell/VanVleet, and a 1st

Sullinger, Siakam, Powell, and a 1st

10:30 a.m. Okay, here we go. Marc Stein reports that the Raptors have also been pursuing Wilson Chandler, but that the Nuggets want a first-round pick back. What’s troubling here is not necessarily the pick, but that Chandler’s salary is higher, which means sending at least one prospect out in the deal to make the salary math work. So, you’re talking Sullinger, Jakob Poeltl or Lucas Nogueira (or Cory Joseph, or two of the other prospects), and a first round pick, and you take on the $12 million owed to Chandler next year, when you’re already set for a serious luxury tax crunch.

This would signal a major all-in move by the Raptors, and it would require a lot of maneuvering next summer. Giving up that many assets and taking on salary for next year – they’d be paying Chandler and Carroll $27 million combined – for a guy who figures to split third-wing duty with Norman Powell…it’s a lot. That doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile, given where the Raptors are and where they want to go, and the marginal gain of such a move with where they are on the win curve. It would just be an aggressive shift of their assets, one not everyone is going to be comfotable with.

9:30 a.m. It’s pretty quiet on the Raptors front. If you’re feeling nostalgic for trade targets of days gone by, Taj Gibson is on the block, per Marc Stein. (Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic are, too. Elsewhere, the Sixers are still shopping Jahlil Okafor. None of this really matters for Toronto, but it at least has the makings of an entertaining day. And McDermott going somewhere else where he can kill the Raptors forever.) Other names out there: Brandon Knight, Tyson Chandler, Suns “other vets” (hi, P.J. Tucker), and Ricky Rubio (for the Knicks).

This isn’t an update, really, but it sounds like the Suns are holding firm on a first for Tucker, and the Raptors have to decide whether to take it or leave it.

The Raptors’ apparent stance, meanwhile, is entirely justifiable. Maybe the Suns would be willing to send a second-rounder back, but if they’ve held firm on wanting a first for Tucker, simply moving up 10-12 spots in the draft doesn’t seem like something they’d do. But who knows?

9 a.m. It’s trade deadline day! Teams have until 3 p.m. to consummate deals that will push them over the top, stock the cupboard for the future, or shed salary for future seasons.

This thread will be updated throughout the day with any relevant rumors or when new deals are reported/announced. So check back often. (The headline will change if anything comes up from the Raptors’ perspective, and it will obviously get its own post if the Raptors get a deal done.)

Here’s a quick look back at what we’ve learned to this point.
