Logged 30 eventful if not particularly productive minutes tonight. Somehow survived an onslaught from Aron Baynes under the net and seemed to have more control on offence. Would still like to see him search for rebounds a little more and help crash the glass.

Powell left the game seven minutes in after noted Raptors killer Aron Baynes kneed him in the leg. For more on what that might mean if he were to miss any time, check out Blake’s piece here.

J. Valanciunas18 MIN, 6 PTS, 2 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 3-4 FG, 0-1 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, -6 +/-

The inconsistencies continue as JV played just 18 minutes, was a ghost in the second half and yet was 3-4 from the field and started the game with some decent energy. Something needs to be figured out with his minutes, and fast.

B+
K. Lowry31 MIN, 19 PTS, 2 REB, 7 AST, 0 STL, 5-10 FG, 4-8 3FG, 5-5 FT, 0 BLK, 3 TO, -4 +/-

Tied his season-high in points with 19 and drained four threes which were both positive signs. He still seems to be deferring too much which may be a product of the new system Casey is trying to implement. He needed to look for his shot more tonight, especially with Kyrie Irving out.

B
D. DeRozan35 MIN, 24 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 0 STL, 8-22 FG, 1-4 3FG, 7-8 FT, 1 BLK, 3 TO, -3 +/-

DDR did his thing for most of this game, but it essentially became all about him in the dying moments of the 4th. He missed the Raptors’ last two shots and while the makes and misses can happen on any night, it was the way that happened that was so bothersome. DeRozan dribbled the air out of the ball until he was forced to put up a shot. Raise your hand if you’ve seen that before.

B-
O. Anunoby22 MIN, 7 PTS, 4 REB, 0 AST, 2 STL, 2-3 FG, 0-1 3FG, 3-4 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, -10 +/-

Outstanding defense tonight. His length was on display all over the court and he even knocked down two of three shots and three of four from the line. He still looks lost with the ball in his hands, but that’s of little concern with how well he’s playing without it.

B-
C. Miles21 MIN, 10 PTS, 1 REB, 0 AST, 2 STL, 4-8 FG, 2-5 3FG, 0-0 FT, 1 BLK, 1 TO, 17 +/-

Miles stepped into a larger role once Powell went down but struggled on defense. He was switched out for Anunoby late in the fourth but hit two deep threes that should help his confidence with his shot going forward.

A-
P. Siakam19 MIN, 8 PTS, 5 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 3-5 FG, 2-3 3FG, 0-1 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, 7 +/-

This is not a recording: Siakam is FAST. Watching him run the floor, battle under the glass and move the ball was awesome tonight. He got the nod over Poetl in this one and looked great. He even hit two threes!

B-
L. Nogueira19 MIN, 0 PTS, 8 REB, 0 AST, 1 STL, 0-3 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0-0 FT, 4 BLK, 1 TO, 9 +/-

A bit of an up and down game for Nogueira. He looked great on defense, finishing with four blocks and switching well enough to keep in front of some of the Celtics’ guards. He was a non-factor on offense tonight but was an incredible source of energy off the bench.

B+
D. Wright18 MIN, 6 PTS, 1 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 2-3 FG, 0-0 3FG, 2-2 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, 3 +/-

Wright led the bench unit the closed out the 3rd quarter and started the 4th and he looked incredibly confident in the role. He moved the ball well and his length on defense was a thing of beauty.

B+
F. VanVleet16 MIN, 4 PTS, 2 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL, 1-3 FG, 0-1 3FG, 2-2 FT, 0 BLK, 3 TO, 2 +/-

Got some more run with Powell out and made arguably the play of the game. Late in the 4th with the Raptors needing a steal or a foul, VanVleet did neither. He pressured Tatum hard enough that the young Celtic swung his elbow around and caught VanVleet in the face. The result was Raptors’ ball and a chance to win. He just plays with so much energy. It’s awesome.

J. Poeltl4 MIN, 2 PTS, 1 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 1-2 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0-0 FT, 1 BLK, 0 TO, -4 +/-

Little upset to not have seen more Poeltl tonight. He was great against New Orleans but got just four minutes of run. I know the situation with all the Raptors’ young bigs is a tough one to navigate, but there’s got to be a better way.

C-
Dwane Casey

Strange rotation choices with Poeltl getting just four minutes. Whatever play he called or didn’t call late in the 4th was brutal. It’s so infuriating to see one brand of basketball played for the entire game…until the old Raptors take over late in the 4th when things get close.

Things We Saw

  1. Aron Baynes should be arrested. Took out Powell and got into it with Ibaka. Just not a good dude.
  2. Jayson Tatum is going to be very good, very soon. His length is useful on both ends of the court and he gave the Raptors problems all night.
  3. Brad Stevens > Dwane Casey.
