This week on The Doctor is In with Phdsteve, I have called in the boys from the world wide roundtable to talk ball and we have a discussion about all the action in NBA and NCAA while continually tying it back to the Raptors!  Joined by my brother Mike (who knows college basketball), Greg Mason (the brain from the south), and Blair Miller from The Fifth Quarter Blog we discuss:

  • Greg takes a stab at last week’s mailbag and what to do to improve the game of Jonas
  • A great road trip so far as the Raps go 3-1 and have only 2 loses in the last two weeks heading into Sacramento
  • A whole lot of optimism about the schedule and fixtures leading up to the All-Star break
  • Questions about what the team can and will do come the trade deadline
  • Steve loves Pau Gasol
  • Blair & Mike re-visit the #tanknation discussion

And then we get about 20 good minutes of NCAA talk

  • Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse remains undefeated and goes to #1 in the polls after a huge win Saturday night, 91-89, in overtime vs Duke
  • Florida is now top 3 and had a big 68-58 win over Mizzou where Chris Walker made his debut. Who is he? Will he propel Florida to #1? Can he be a top 10 pick?
  • Wichita State is still undefeated and San Diego State is also top 5- Is there a Cinderella Story here?
  • And then all the obligatory talk about Wiggins, Embiid, Parker and 1 new name: Willie Cauley-Stein

Like the pod. However, you guys gotta either release these earlier, or record later. Putting this up to listen after the Sac debacle, yet having recorded it before so it is not up to date, is killer. Again, appreciate the pod and think you guys are doing great but it would be awesome if you could make an adjustment to get these out earlier so they can more accurately reflect what’s going on with the team. Especially after last night, a lot of the tone is obsolete. Thanks guys!

Yeah…great pod- and would of been perfect pre sac game. Afterwards-been like 1 or 2 huge games(Was it Ross’s 51?) that podcast has posted day after a HUGE game. It takes some of the fun out of it.

Anyone noticed a big drop in non-republic podcasts? Raptor blog & Dinonation both down & out.

Hey guys what do you think of my rebrand I just did last night. More of a third jersey then anything. Inspired by the jay hawks cream jerseys combined with our retro look. http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w82/VirtualSports/RapTorsrebrand.png

I like it a lot. Does it come in blue? Maybe I’m in the minority- but Id like to see the Raps go Blue and White.

      • Blair Miller

I’d even like to see them change to the old-school Huskies. Never like Raptors; it was a public vote when Jurassic Park was a fad, like having a current expansion franchise named the Zombies….if it had been just a few years later would the team have been named the Titanics? Go with a less contextual name.

im still a fan of a raptors. not a fan of a team losing its history & changing things up. And regardless if it was in a movie, it is also a dinosaur vilocoraptor (however you spell it) did exist. And its kind of cool to be named after a dinosaur, its original & creative.

Great pod. The one thing about the logic of “why would you throw the season for a 25% chance at the first pick” is totally missing the point. Especially in this draft, where there isnt a big drop off in the top 5ish and is quite a healthy debate as to who will go where.
So, the point is, that if you finish last, you have 100% chance at the top 4. Thats one of Wiggins, Embid, Randle, or Parker. While nothing is 100% certainty, any one of those players look like they have a really, really good chance and making a difference at the NBA level.
That is why the best franchises (LAL, BOS) along with a handful of other teams are tanking. Those ARE good odds in terms of getting a player that could instantly be the best player on your team in the case of someone like the Bucks. Throw in the fact that you are getting the player at the rookie salary scale vs something like $10-12 mm per year IF you can convince an impact free agent to come to your team.
I totally agree with a team like the Raps going for it this year because they have a window .. but for many other teams, tank is totally the way to go. And, Im pretty sure we will look back at LAL and BOS and curse the day they picked up a top player to help the rich get richer
