L. Scola 14 MIN | 0-5 FG | 0-4 3FG | 1-2 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 1 PTS | -5 +/- I almost feel bad giving Scola a bad grade, because I really don’t blame him. Casey is doing him no favors not only starting him, but leaving him in for far too long to start each half. And the threes he missed were open. But this was all kinda of bad.
D. Carroll 32 MIN | 4-9 FG | 4-8 3FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 12 PTS | -8 +/- Did a pretty solid job on George with one or two exceptions. That alone would have been enough, but he also knocked down open looks (the only Raptor to do so) and made a few hustle plays. More of Carroll at the four in three-wing sets, please.
J. Valanciunas 28 MIN | 6-7 FG | 0-0 3FG | 4-4 FT | 6 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 16 PTS | -15 +/- Why, exactly, did he only get seven attempts? I know the issues with simply dumping it into the post, but how little they looked for improvised post-ups from the pick-and-roll was shocking, and they basically ignored their interior edge. He responded by having a pretty poor outing in other areas. Note: I’m seeing most disagree with this grade. I’ll have to focus in when I rewatch, but I really didn’t think he played well beyond making the most of limited touches. But I’ll be sure to reevaluate.
K. Lowry 36 MIN | 4-12 FG | 0-5 3FG | 4-6 FT | 3 REB | 5 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 12 PTS | -8 +/- Another tough shooting night for Lowry, and unlike the last two, he wasn’t able to make up for it with his usual KLOE-ness. Didn’t have the best luck with fouls, and that rendered him a little passive on Hill. Not his best showing. And no, I don’t know anything about the elbow – he’s healthy in my books until I hear otherwise.
D. DeRozan 33 MIN | 4-15 FG | 0-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 6 TO | 8 PTS | -14 +/- I gave DeRozan a C+ after Game 3 and got the usual “Blake hates DeRozan” and “Blake overlooks DeRozan’s flaws” duelling comment threads. You guys go ahead and have at it. This was awful. Shot selection, turnovers, decision making, and by the end even his body language was bad. I refuse to write a player this talented off for the series, but my confidence is hanging on by a thread.
J. Thompson 3 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +2 +/- If Casey is resigned to Patterson off the bench, maybe you give the rangier Thompson a shot starting at the four? He’s a better matchup for Turner, at least.
J. Johnson 3 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 3FG | 2-2 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +2 +/- I’ve had a few questions about Johnson maybe seeing time. I don’t think so – he was really bad down the stretch, and so long as Carroll is doing a solid job on George, he’s relegated to garbage time duty. Sorry, Bloodsport Nation.
P. Patterson 27 MIN | 2-5 FG | 1-4 3FG | 3-4 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 8 PTS | -22 +/- One of his worst performances in recent memory, he wasn’t able to bring his usual spark off the pine. Bad showing aside, I still think he should be playing more, but damn, he’s got to do a better job helping out on the glass.
T. Ross 19 MIN | 2-9 FG | 1-4 3FG | 2-2 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 7 PTS | -3 +/- Thought he did a good job against the Pacers’ reserve guards, but when his shot isn’t dropping, I totally get why people look and ask “why not Norm?” That spacing is important, still, but it’s ugly when the shot’s off.
B. Biyombo 13 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 3-8 FT | 9 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 5 PTS | -5 +/- At least one regular had some energy and did work on the glass. But dude, why are you getting in Mahinmi’s jersey on a face-up from 22 feet? Sag back and let him fire away.
D. Wright 3 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +2 +/- Missing three shots in two minutes is a nice way to get those playoff reps in rapid-fire, I guess.
C. Joseph 14 MIN | 0-2 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 0 PTS | -17 +/- Who was this?
N. Powell 14 MIN | 3-5 FG | 2-3 3FG | 2-2 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | +6 +/- He was the only player in the 10-man rotation with a positive plus-minus. Shocking, right? Sure, he missed an open momentum corner three, but there’s very little not to like here. He’s solid on Ellis, Lawson, or Stuckey and could spot in on Hill, and he should be an early sub when “energy” appears to be the problem.
Dwane Casey I think it’s fair to say I’ve generally been more pro-Casey than most, and when your team comes out and plays this poorly, you have to look at the individuals, too. But Scola’s way-too-long hook, the icing of Powell for so long, keeping Ross in with the smaller group late when you didn’t need the spacing, not going for a 2-for-1 after a long review, disorganized sets out of timeout…there was a lot to dislike here. He responded well in Games 2 and 3, so let’s see how he does for Game 5.
Five Things We Saw
- I don’t understand the effort level for either side through four games. It seems reductive, but in all four games, one of the two teams has essentially failed to show up, and admitted as much. This is the playoffs. The series is now tied 2-2. Who the hell is showing up for Game 5, and why is this even a question?
- A lot of stats from this game, particularly the 3-point shooting, can be expected to regress. It’s easy to say “the Raptors should be better,” or “the Pacers won’t be that good again.” But here’s the thing: It’s now a three-game series. That’s an incredibly small sample in which to expect normalization. The Raptors HAVE to play better, like, now.
- I saw a lot of comments about the officiating in this one. There were a couple of iffy whistles, sure. At the same time, the free-throw disparity swung back Toronto’s way in a game in which they were far less aggressive. More notably: The Raptors were down 25 in the first half. If that’s on the refs, Tim Donaghy is blushing somewhere.
- Lowry and DeRozan have combined to shoot, like, a negative percentage in this series. That the Raptors are 2-2 is a minor miracle through that lens, and if there’s any reason for optimism in Game 5, it’s that. If there’s any reason for pessimism, it’s also that.
- It was nice to see Raptors fans travel so well. Hopefully they do so again for Game 6 and their guys give them a much better showing for it.
NOTE: I have no idea how A+ got in there for Ross originally. That was a mistake.
NOTE #2: As mentioned in his capsule above, most seem to think I was a little harsh on JV today. I didn’t think he played very well beyond making the most of his limited touches, but message received. I always go back and rewatch the games, anyway, and I’ll be sure to focus in on his performance. Apologies if it ends up the C- was a poor grade.
