Quick Reaction: Sixers 76, Raptors 96

That was harder than it needed to be.

Recap | Box Score
96Toronto Raptors
Luis Scola, PF 27 MIN | 10-14 FG | 2-4 3FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 22 PTS | +16 +/-

Sixers are a young, undisciplined bunch with below-average basketball IQ, so when they come up against a wily veteran like Scola, he’s got a bag of tricks that they just can’t handle. Old man game was in full effect tonight that his defensive shortcomings didn’t even matter.

Terrence Ross, SF 29 MIN | 0-6 FG | 0-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -6 +/-

Good thing we were playing the Sixers because if he had such an ineffectual game in a loss against a real team, we’d be taking a collective dump all over his headband. That block by Thompson on him was downright embarrassing.

Bismack Biyombo, C 27 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 3FG | 2-4 FT | 9 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 6 PTS | +16 +/-

Will rebound for food. His PER is down from 15.2 to 12.0 this year yet he’s having a greater impact. Tells you the value of that stat. There needs to be a new stat created to measure the offensive production of guys like Biyombo. Call it DIGITWOSTTS for Did I Get In The Way Of Someone Trying To Score? Lower the better. Kind of like golf. Did make Okafor’s life difficult by contesting everything.

Kyle Lowry, PG 35 MIN | 5-15 FG | 3-8 3FG | 3-4 FT | 5 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 3 BLK | 2 TO | 16 PTS | +15 +/-

Seemed bothered by the fact that he still had to put in a real shift to put this trash of a team away. Got called back with 7 minutes left in the fourth to seal the deal, which was annoying. He had some very good help defense plays in the second half, which nobody saw coming. Thank you for understanding, Kyle.

DeMar DeRozan, SG 34 MIN | 6-14 FG | 0-1 3FG | 13-14 FT | 8 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 25 PTS | +30 +/-

He could’ve had 50 FTs if he wanted to tonight since Philly can’t defend without reaching. Or defend at all. Was guarding Stauskas for a while there who he could’ve abused a lot more than he did. Got called back with 7 minutes left in the fourth to seal the deal, which was annoying.

Anthony Bennett, PF 1 MIN | 1-1 FG | 1-1 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 3 PTS | +1 +/-

Had totally forgotten about him. Hit a meaningless three from the left corner with about 20 seconds left in garbage time. Should be taking the GO Bus to the D-League right after the game.

James Johnson, PF 14 MIN | 3-6 FG | 1-2 3FG | 2-4 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 9 PTS | -11 +/-

Weird minutes again for Johnson, who’s not part of the rotation but also not completely out of the rotation, if that makes any sense. A game like this suits him because he can wander defensively without having to worry about Philly’s piss-poor, 27th ranked 3pt shooting making him pay (although they did hit their fair share today). Had a couple coast-to-coast moves and a three! You know what that means, he’s benched till March.

Patrick Patterson, PF 26 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-2 3FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +10 +/-

Man, is this guy a shell of his former self. Actually, he’s now exactly like his former, former self who played in Sacramento: spotty jump-shooting, inconsistent defense and not having any idea of what you’re going to get out of him on any given night. His transition defense tonight was bad and made to look worse because he’s always busy admiring his miss instead of tracking back.

Lucas Nogueira, C 14 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-0 3FG | 1-2 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 3 PTS | -13 +/-

Casey was careful with his minutes coming back from a minor injury, and we didn’t see much of a two-man game on offense. He was checking Okafor adequately and made him miss a couple close-range jumpers.

Cory Joseph, PG 29 MIN | 2-11 FG | 0-2 3FG | 4-6 FT | 4 REB | 4 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 8 PTS | +16 +/-

Really felt he could’ve done a lot more. I get dribbling a lot to probe around an organized defense, but we’re talking about Philly here. Simple dribble-drives will break these defense down and I felt he wasted a lot of clock overcomplicating possessions and allowing Philly’s defense to get set.

Norman Powell, SG 1 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +4 +/-

Came in during garbage time and threw one down on the break.

Dwane Casey

Tried to give DeRozan and Lowry a break tonight but his bench unit couldn’t stop Philly in transition and was forced to bring them back. Good intentions.

Three Things We Saw

  1. Good start but couldn’t put Philly away, mostly due to lacking transition defense, poor production from Ross and Patterson, and Philly shooting well above their three-point percentage for the game.
  2. Probably had an eye on Indiana tomorrow so can’t really blame them.
  3. Yawn…I got to go record a podcast.
