Though his starting spot is in jeopardy, we need Precious to find his confidence again. His bounce and versatility would have been helpful tonight but he has clearly lost the trust of the coaching staff.

It would have been great to see OG knock that game winner down. The most impressive part has been his ability to read where the help is coming from. I can’t wait until this new and improved version of him plays with Pascal.

B-
S. Barnes38 MIN, 14 PTS, 10 REB, 4 AST, 0 STL, 7-19 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0- FT, 2 BLK, 1 TO, +5 +/-

Scottie was missing something tonight. His crazy touch around the rim wasn’t there, but we can’t fault him considering the hand injury. There’s a parallel universe out there where Scottie successfully tips that game winner in and his legend continues to grow.

F. VanVleet37 MIN, 18 PTS, 6 REB, 6 AST, 1 STL, 6-18 FG, 4-8 3FG, 3- FT, 0 BLK, 3 TO, -3 +/-

Everything was pretty solid up until that questionable shot from three late. He bet on himself, and it didn’t work out. Everyone will be better when Pascal returns, but Freddie will be the one who benefits the most, even if it’s just to reduce his minutes and workload.

A-
G. Trent Jr.37 MIN, 17 PTS, 2 REB, 1 AST, 6 STL, 7-14 FG, 3-4 3FG, 0- FT, 2 BLK, 3 TO, -5 +/-

Gary continues to impress. He hit timely shots early and kept us going when our offense stalled. And his consecutive stops on Sexton in the final seconds were brilliant.

C. Boucher7 MIN, 1 PTS, 1 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 0-2 FG, 0-1 3FG, 2- FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, -4 +/-

I feel bad for Chris. He’s out there overthinking things. It would be an absolute luxury to have the super confident player we saw last year in Tampa, but we’re not even getting adequate play from him right now.

B+
K. Birch30 MIN, 4 PTS, 8 REB, 2 AST, 0 STL, 2-8 FG, 0-1 3FG, 0- FT, 2 BLK, 0 TO, -6 +/-

Birch gave us his all tonight. I know he missed a few easy shots throughout the game but he absolutely battled against the unreal length Cleveland has at its disposal. That dive for the loose ball late is something we probably pay more attention to had we come away with the win. We probably get blown out without his hustle and willingness to box out.

Since putting up extra shots at the SBA a few games ago, Malachi has flashed glimpses of what we saw last season. It’s incredibly entertaining to watch our young guys battle it out. This season has been fun.

He looked good in the minutes he was on the floor, but Nurse opted for a bit more shooting tonight to counter how crowded it was in the paint. We may get an extended battle for the back-up point guard role after all.

S. Mykhailiuk19 MIN, 3 PTS, 2 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 1-5 FG, 1-3 3FG, 0- FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, -1 +/-

I thought we would see a bit more of Svi tonight but Scottie played nearly 40 minutes instead. He didn’t have it going offensively but he’ll certainly bounce back.

B
Nick Nurse

Nurse tried a few different things tonight and had it not been for a few missed “gimmies” at the rim, we would be arguing that the team and coaching staff put forth a gutsy performance. Pascal and Yuta need to return ASAP, if anything just to lower everyone’s minutes.

We’ll go with a B since it’s not like Nurse had anyone on the bench to match up with Mobley and Allen’s length. He may also need to start trusting the bench a bit more, but I understand why he doesn’t at the moment.

Things We Saw

  1. This was the first time I got to watch Mobley play a full game in the NBA, and wow. He’s a true unicorn. If he continues to play like this, I’d understand if he won rookie of the year over Scottie Barnes. Here’s to Scottie recruiting him down the road and we look at tonight as the first time Mobley scored two points for us.
