Quick Reaction: Raptors 108, Sixers 94

The Raptors started in a 12-0 hole, recovered nicely, and then, as usual, let their bad opponent hang around too long.

Recap | Box Score

Luis Scola, PF 18 MIN | 1-5 FG | 0-1 3FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 2 PTS | +3 +/-

Pretty rough night against a young, spry frontline. He’s a bit matchup-dependent and this wasn’t his night. That’s fine, he’ll bounce back, I’m sure.

James Johnson, PF 13 MIN | 2-5 FG | 0-1 3FG | 1-1 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 5 PTS | -8 +/-

Pretty quiet night. The Sixers stuck Stauskas on him in what I thought was an exploitable matchup, but the Raptors didn’t go to it too often. His minutes will draw the ire of some, but the reality is Johnson’s value comes primarily with man defense, and there were no wing threats for him to guard. Usually a plus-minus stud, he was the worst Raptor by that regard, though I don’t think he played poorly.

Jonas Valanciunas, C 29 MIN | 7-10 FG | 0-0 3FG | 3-5 FT | 9 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 1 TO | 17 PTS | +16 +/-

I know some won’t like this grade because Okafor ate his lunch early, but Valanciunas really settled in from there and the Sixers had no answer at the other end. Eight fourth-quarter points and a nice job in help defense when called upon.

Kyle Lowry, PG 39 MIN | 10-17 FG | 1-4 3FG | 4-5 FT | 6 REB | 5 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 25 PTS | +20 +/-

Think he got up for playing in his hometown? Really re-set the tone when the Raptors were slipping late. Struggled with Smith, but who didn’t?

DeMar DeRozan, SG 37 MIN | 9-17 FG | 0-2 3FG | 1-2 FT | 7 REB | 5 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 19 PTS | +6 +/-

A quiet second half after a great start, and it was a bit disappointing he didn’t record a second-half assist after how well he broke the defense down early. Curiously light night at the line.

Patrick Patterson, PF 30 MIN | 3-5 FG | 3-4 3FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 11 PTS | +7 +/-

A nice bounce-back offensively, but two rebounds over 57 minutes in two games is pretty inexcusable. Thought he and Ross brought a nice intensity off the bench, especially in the first quarter to help settle things.

Terrence Ross, SF 24 MIN | 6-10 FG | 1-4 3FG | 3-4 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 16 PTS | +7 +/-

Terrific first-half minutes when the team really need it. They got him involved early and often, and his mid-range jumper was falling. Took four free-throw attempts, which feels like a career-high.

Bismack Biyombo, C 18 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | 0 +/-

Made things tough on the Sixers around the rim, which was big for stretches. Was surprised he didn’t play more late, but the Sixers were making things tough on the Raptors’ offense by hilariously guarding Biyombo pick-and-rolls and preventing penetration, and Valanciunas had a strong second half. Hit a 15-footer, his longest bucket of the season.

Delon Wright, PG 1 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -1 +/-

He had an assist. Cool. Sure would be nice to see him for more than two possessions so we can actually get a non-D-League look.

Cory Joseph, PG 31 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-1 3FG | 7-8 FT | 5 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 9 PTS | +19 +/-

Struggled with the Ish assignment and botched a few side pick-and-roll coverages. Brought a nice aggression offensively that he sometimes lacks, and the two-PG looks killed the Sixers. Nice to see him steady of late.

Norman Powell, SG 2 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 3FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -4 +/-

Had a nice straight-line drive in transition, as he does. Really not enough of a sample to judge, as usual.

Dwane Casey

Liked that he took an early timeout to settle things, and when that didn’t work, went to the bench quickly. I’m not sure if the blame falls on him for not putting teams away, but playing Lowry & DeRozan a combined 76 minutes is a bad look. Ball movement was better than a night ago.

Five Things We Saw

  1. How, exactly, do you get down 12-0 to the Sixers? The Raptors answered with a nice 57-32 run the rest of the half but lost their footing out of the break. How do you let Philly shoot 48.8 percent overall? The threes (11/17), those happen, I suppose, and they didn’t surrender many attempts, but this was a far cry from the defense of the last two games.
  2. Argue with giving up two second-rounders in a rebuild for a few months of a pending UFA, but Ish Smith is the truth. He was unbelievable. Again.
  3. T.J. McConnell is my dude, but I’m thinking he deserves the nickname “Weightless,” as he has exactly zero gravitational pull on a defense.
  4. I called 104-92 as a final score. Close enough, right? I also hoped the Raptors would finish things early to get the stars some rest and the young guys some run, but we all knew that wasn’t actually going to happen. I can’t figure out why they can’t put bad teams away.
  5. The Raptors play just once in the next eight days. This is a great chance to get some rest, regroup, and do some team bonding ahead of what’s a pretty favorable stretch of schedule. I’ve given the Raptors a pass at times because of the tough hand they’ve been dealt early, but I’m expecting big things after England.
