Light work for the Raptors superstar tonight. 19 first quarter points, and then it felt like he mostly coasted the rest of the way to his 35. Made it look really easy against a top-5 NBA defense, getting whatever he wanted whenever he found himself in single coverage.

O. Anunoby30 MIN, 10 PTS, 5 REB, 2 AST, 4 STL, 3-5 FG, 0-1 3FG, 4-7 FT, 1 BLK, 2 TO, 19 +/-

His defense on Donovan Mitchell was a huge part of setting the tone early, and helped the Raptors build that massive lead. He made Mitchell’s life really difficult, and although Mitchell had a better third quarter, the Jazz never really recovered from that first half.

A+
M. Gasol25 MIN, 11 PTS, 5 REB, 6 AST, 0 STL, 4-8 FG, 3-5 3FG, 0-0 FT, 2 BLK, 1 TO, 15 +/-

The perfect Marc Gasol game in a lot of ways. Came out aggressive and scored 11 points quickly in the first quarter, and then never scored(or really tried to) after that. Played a great game in every other way as well.

Going up against Mike Conley, an easy 21/5/11 with no turnovers is the kinda thing we’ve gotten used to from Fred, but it really is remarkable. He’s established himself in Lowry’s absence, and when Kyle returns the Raptors offense could get even scarier.

Norm was the least notable starter tonight, which isn’t a knock on him. Everyone else was just a little bit more impressive, while he was mostly just solid, which is all the team needs from Norm on any given night. His role likely gets reduced soon with Lowry’s return, but he’s been good filling in.

R. Hollis-Jefferson24 MIN, 10 PTS, 6 REB, 2 AST, 1 STL, 4-7 FG, 0-0 3FG, 2-2 FT, 2 BLK, 0 TO, 11 +/-

Rondae Hustle-Jefferson, as Matt Devlin called him, was the same player in this one he is in every other game. Outworked everyone else on the floor, made a bunch of great momentum plays, and had a brilliant assist in the paint again.

A+
T. Davis23 MIN, 13 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST, 0 STL, 5-7 FG, 2-3 3FG, 1-2 FT, 1 BLK, 3 TO, 12 +/-

Terence belongs in the conversation as one of the best rookies in the NBA this season, and has been an incredible story. Steps up every time he’s asked and impacts the game in many different ways. Hit a bunch of big shots again tonight, and made some great defensive plays as well.

S. Ibaka21 MIN, 13 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL, 5-13 FG, 2-5 3FG, 1-1 FT, 0 BLK, 3 TO, 7 +/-

Great to have Serge back, and although there was some rust, he hit some threes in the second half to put the Jazz away when they started to get the lead back down and make the game a little bit interesting. Still getting his legs back under him, but a lot of good signs tonight.

Nick Nurse

Did Nick Nurse ever have the Raptors ready to go tonight. They were dominant for the entire first half before taking their foot off the gas in the third quarter. His defense was on point, the offense was running. It was a clinic, and that’s what we’ve come to expect from Nurse.

Things We Saw

  1. 77-37. The first half was incredible. Everything worked for the Raptors, and the defense was stifling, and this was a good opponent. Just a great half of basketball from Toronto and a joy to watch.
  2. The rubberband effect is a real thing. When you get a huge lead, it’s naturally to mentally check out a little bit, and take your foot off the gas, and pride kicked in for the Jazz. They had a huge third quarter, got the lead back down to 15, and showed that they weren’t going to just give up. That’s somewhat expected when you have a first half score like we did tonight.
  3. That comeback took a lot out of Utah though, and the Raptors re-engaged long enough in the fourth quarter to close it out. Despite the lead being less impressive at the end of the night, this was a really high quality win against a good Western Conference opponent.
